CaddieON Improves Golf Game with Technologies from STMicroelectronics

The golfers can enjoy their sport even more using the new CaddieON(R) electronic golf-play analyzer built with advanced sensing, control, and wireless communication chips from STMicroelectronics. Launched by CaddieON Inc., this personal electronic caddie help golfers automatically track and analyze their game. The easy-to-use system comprises a smart-sensor wrist device, simple RFID tags for identifying each club, the smartphone app, and a player portal in cloud service. The wrist device reads each club's tag and automatically records the round stroke by stroke, and sends data to the app via Bluetooth(R). ST technologies used in the CaddieON wrist device electronics include the RFID reader IC for identifying tagged clubs, a tiny single-chip accelerometer for accurate stroke detection, and an ultra-low-power microcontroller for system control. The CaddieON wrist device uses ST's CR95HF integrated transceiver IC for reading the RFID tags attached to each of the player's clubs. The CR95HF manages frame coding and decoding for standard contactless applications. It supports ISO/IEC 14443 Type A and B, ISO/IEC 15693 and ISO/IEC 18092 protocols, and also embeds an analog front end (AFE) to provide the 13.56MHz air interface. It can also detect, read and write NFC Forum Type 1, 2, 3 and 4 tags. Helping ensure faultlessly accurate stroke detection is the ST LIS3DSH ultra low-power high-performance three-axis linear accelerometer. The LIS3DSH operates from a supply voltage as low as 1.71V, and has a dynamically selectable full scale of up to +/-16g. It can be configured to generate interrupts according to user-defined movement patterns, and integrates a programmable state machine as well as a FIFO buffer that helps reduce host-processor intervention. It is housed in a tiny 3mm x 3mm x 1mm thin plastic land grid array package (LGA). ST has more than 900 MEMS-related patents and patent applications worldwide. To manage key features of the wrist device, CaddieON uses an ultra-low-power STM32L1 microcontroller.

AT&S, Soundchip, and STMicroelectronics Craft Innovative Bionic Ear

AT&S, Soundchip SA and STMicroelectronics announced their collaboration in innovating a bionic hearing module that, when installed into a personal audio device, delivers an amazing wearable sound experience controlled at the ear by the wearer and software intelligence. Personal audio devices, like an MP3 player or smartphone, equipped with the bionic hearing module, provide wearers with the ability to electronically "open" and "close" their ears to ambient sound conditions, or even to augment ambient sound with programmed audio from a connected smart device. This capability can fully protect wearers from noise in situations where the ambient sound is too loud, or to open the ear for natural conversation with others, without having to remove the audio device, suffer from the discomfort of occlusion, or worse, the pain of loud noise. The bionic hearing module integrates a broad spectrum of advanced electronics to further enhance the on-the-go audio experience, including head-tracking and other sensing, to enable new features, including augmented-audio guidance and biometric monitoring. The multi-mode audio capabilities of the bionic hearing module are enabled through the use of HD-PA(R) technology developed by Soundchip. Their implementation in a compact form factor is made possible through the use of patented Soundstrate(R) technology, which enables the efficient combination of electronic, acoustic, and transmission means within a single, compact mechanical structure. The semiconductor components in the bionic hearing module comprise the latest Motion and Audio MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) components from STMicroelectronics, an HD-PA(R)-compliant Audio Engine for zero-latency sound processing, and an ultra-low-power STM32 MCU from ST's portfolio of more than 500 32-bit ARM(R) Cortex(R)-M-core microcontrollers. The bionic hearing module's packaging employs the latest in ECP(R) (Embedded Component Packaging) and 2.5D(R) PCB (Printed Circuit Board) technology from AT&S, which is capable of integrating acoustic, electroacoustic, passive and active electronic components with unmatched efficiency, providing module dimensions ideally suited to the comfort and size constraints of in-ear operation, and compatible with most existing in-ear-type personal audio devices.

STMicroelectronics to Offer Reference Implementation of Frog by Wyplay Middleware for All its ARM(r) Set-Top-Box SoCs

Wyplay and STMicroelectronics announced the availability of "Bull Frog" middleware, the Frog by Wyplay Set-top-Box middleware version 2.0 on ST's Cannes and Monaco families of ARM(R) System-on-Chip products. The Companies also disclosed their plan for an extension spanning the full ARM/HEVC product range from Liege2 (STiH301) to the latest UHDp60 family members STiH314/318/414/418. ST contribution to the Frog codebase will be shared among a growing community of more than 60 licensee companies, including device manufacturers, independent software vendors, software services providers, and operators. Code contributed by ST covers adaptations of the Frog middleware to the ST SDK2 Linux(TM) software environment and specific hardware capabilities, API extensions, as well as optimization of the rendering of HTML5 applications. ST's contribution exemplifies the collaborative nature of the Frog shared-source ecosystem, a pre-integrated and pre-validated reference implementation that includes a UI, middleware, drivers, OS, and hardware. This level of integration and feature alignment yields an accelerated speed to market for the introduction of convergent services such as Over-The-Top services by pay-TV operators.
