STMicroelectronics and Istituto Italiano Di Tecnologia Sign R&D Collaboration Agreement

STMicroelectronics and the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia have announced the signing of a formal agreement sealing their long-standing collaboration on a range of research activities, including Robotics, Neuroscience, Energy and Environment, and Health and Safety. The agreement, which will have an initial duration of three years, builds on many years of previous cooperation between the two parties. The cooperation uses multiple Joint Research Programs to exploit the synergies between IIT's high-level expertise in long-term megatrends such as robotics, nanotechnology, pattern analysis, and computer vision and ST's know-how in semiconductor technology and design.

Reference Design from MaxLinear and STMicroelectronics to Speed Multi-Channel Ultra HD HEVC Satellite STB & Gateway Deployments

MaxLinear, Inc. and STMicroelectronics announced a reference design aimed at accelerating the adoption of next-generation Ultra HD set-top boxes (STB) and gateways for satellite pay-TV operators worldwide. The reference design accelerates OEM development of the STBs and gateways, enabling satellite operators to deliver Ultra HD content using the high-efficiency video-coding (HEVC/H.265) standard. The advanced design, combining technology from ST and MaxLinear, supports the most demanding satellite-operator service offerings, including multiple decode, multi-channel personal video recorder (PVR), video-on-demand (VOD), multiple transcoding for streaming to second-screen clients and graphics, even while maintaining very-low power consumption. The reference design leverages MaxLinear's MxL5xx family of satellite Full-Spectrum Capture(TM) (FSC(TM)) receivers, and ST's pin-compatible STiH312 "Cannes" and STiH412 "Monaco" set-top box system-on-chip (SoC) decoders. The platform supports a full array of end products, from HD HEVC-ready STBs with multiple-channel decoding to high-end servers with "4K" Ultra HD resolution and HEVC decode, along with the display and real-time transcoding of numerous HD streams simultaneously. Both device families are pin-compatible, making the reference design scalable from four to eight channels and flexible to support either full HD or 4K Ultra HD with or without transcode. The platform can also be adapted for cable MSOs using the pin-compatible MxL2xx family of cable FSC multi-channel receivers. The FSC front-end allows satellite operators to support a range of multi-channel features, including fast channel-change time, video streaming to multiple televisions or IP devices, flexible record/watch combinations and progressive VOD in background. Optional terrestrial front-end modules based on MaxLinear's terrestrial receiver technology can be added to the platform to enable capture of over-the-air terrestrial broadcast channels. The Cannes/Monaco SoC design is based on ARM multi-core processors, superior 2D/3D graphics performance with a Mali(TM) GPU, integrated hardware Faroudja(R) multimedia subsystem with HEVC-capable robust video decoder, high-performance video encoder, and high-quality video pre/post processing. The Cannes/Monaco SoC families provide multiple interfaces: PCIe(TM) supporting Wi-Fi connectivity, smart-card interfaces, 6Gbit/s Gen 3 eSATA interfaces, USB2/3, SPI, I2C, SDIO and DDR3 memory support for flexible and affordable bill-of-materials HW designs. A security toolbox for premium content delivery is provided to optimize performance for premium content. The low power draw of both chipset families combined with support for active standby mode enables low-power solutions.

STMicroelectronics Support IGRS Protocol to Enable the Chinese Standard Home Gateway

STMicroelectronics NV and IGRS Information Industry Association (IGRS Alliance) announced that numerous processors from ST can support the Chinese smart-home standard IGRS. Starting from Orly (STiH416), the IGRS (Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing) protocol will be extended to Alicante (STiD12), Cannes (STiH312) and Monaco (STiH412) product series. An ST Working Group in IGRS also kicked off at the same time. ST's DOCSIS(R) 3.0-certified([1]) cable-modem chips (the Alicante/STiD12 product family) provide fast network connectivity for multimedia home entertainment and interactive broadband services. With extremely high data rates going up to 800Mbit/s, they enable set-top boxes and home gateways to deliver video and Internet data services over a single network and support the simultaneous use of multiple connected devices. The DOCSIS 3.0 chips and associated software stack facilitate access to on-demand and streaming content and support the next-generation Internet Protocol (IPv6) that enables more devices to be connected to the Internet through server and gateway boxes. ST's latest multimedia application-processor System-on-Chips (the Cannes/STiH312 client-box and Monaco/STiH412 server-box and multimedia-gateway product families) support decode and display resolution up to the Ultra HD (2160p) and the next-generation H.265 /HEVC([2]) video compression. This combination aims to extend the viewing experience for end users with more realistic and in-the-action immersion. ST's Cannes and Monaco architectures are based on the high-performance Dual ARM(R) Cortex(R) Central Processing Unit that provides support for all major software stacks in the set-top box, server and gateway markets enabling smooth interaction with the IGRS protocol.
