STMicroelectronics Reveals New Automotive-Qualified Silicon-Carbide (Sic) Diodes

STMicroelectronics has revealed new automotive-qualified silicon-carbide (SiC) diodes for advanced on-board battery chargers (OBCs) in electric vehicles such as Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) that demand high power-handing capability within a confined space. These diodes allow designers to build smaller power modules, which is good for automotive applications and makes them also a strong choice for tackling the Little Box Challenge presented by Google and IEEE. The diodes employ advanced technology to prevent high-current spikes from damaging the device. Until now, designers have typically over-specified the diodes for safety, whereas ST's new technology provides 2.5 times greater over-current capability versus rated current. This enables the use of lower-current diodes, which are smaller and more economical, without compromising reliability or losing efficiency. ST's new SiC diodes are automotive qualified, and feature increased reverse-breakdown voltage of 650V, satisfying the voltage derating factors applied by designers and car manufacturers to ensure suitable safety margin between normal and short-term peak voltages across the semiconductors used in OBC.

Sony Selects STMicroelectronics' Secure Microcontroller for Next-Generation Payment Cards in Japan

STMicroelectronics announced that its latest dual-interface secure microcontroller has been selected by Sony to power the new micropayment-enabled cards that will reach Japanese consumers by first half of 2016. The market's most advanced dual-interface secure microcontroller, ST's ST31G480 combines high computing power and energy efficiency with superior flexibility and interoperability. It is the only device available that can automatically detect and handle different types of radio-frequency communication used by the card readers. This enables Sony and other OEMs to develop and deploy contactless multi-application payment cards that can operate across different standards, infrastructures, and geographies. Slated to arrive on the market in first half of 2016, the new smartcard payment solution introduced by Sony will be the first in Japan to combine both the latest VISA/MasterCard/JCB dual-interface payment schemes and the FeliCa-based payment applications in a single chip. In addition to multi-payment functionality, the ST chip-card technology ensures stable transaction speeds, robustness, and ease of use.
