STMicroelectronics Reveals a New Highly Accurate Optical Range-Finding Module

STMicroelectronics has revealed a new highly accurate optical range-finding module based on FlightSense Time-of-Flight technology that offers designers superior distance-measurement capability. The company provides accurate distance sensing by measuring the time for emitted light to reflect back from the target, whereas conventional sensors can only report reflected signal levels and not absolute distance. ST's FlightSense(TM) technology brings unique advantages versus conventional infrared sensors; measuring longer ranges that are independent of the target reflectivity, at high frame rate and low power. ST's VL6180X module combines FlightSense(TM) proximity sensing with an ambient-light sensor (ALS) and supports basic gesture recognition to simplify the user-interface design while also offering enhanced performance. This new device supports a wide range of creative use cases across multiple markets, including smartphones, tablets, and game controllers, while also improving the performance of consumer appliances and industrial products. Global electronics giant LG utilizes the FlightSense(TM) technology to assist the laser auto-focus performance of its G3 smartphone. The VL6180X module is offered in a compact 4.8mm x 2.8mm x 1.0mm optical LGA12 package and can accurately measure the distance to objects at up to 100mm or even farther, subject to operating conditions. The module provides an I(2) C interface for host control and reading ranging or ambient light level results, as well as two programmable GPIO pins that can be configured to implement threshold applications. Designers can easily discover all the possibilities of ST's latest proximity-sensor module with the newly introduced VL6180X Explorer evaluation kit. The kit not only allows the customer to quickly get started with FlightSense(TM) technology, but also supports the development of applications in a real device. It combines a USB-pluggable STM32Nucleo board and VL6180X sensor shield containing the sensor, a 4-digit LED display, and a slider switch to control the ranging and ALS functions. The display shows either the distance to the target or the ambient light level.

STMicroelectronics Announces the Extension of STM32 Family of More Than 500 Pin- and Software-Compatible Microcontrollers

STMicroelectronics announced the extension of its STM32 family of more than 500 pin- and software-compatible microcontrollers. The new STM32 F7 microcontroller (MCU) series leverages the ARM Cortex-M7 core. ST`s STM32 F7 series leapfrogs the previous high-performance 32-bit Cortex-M champ - ST`s own STM32 4 - in delivering up to twice as much processing and DSP performance that is accessible via a seamless upgrade path. Headlining most successful family of Cortex M-core-based microcontrollers, the new STM32 F7 MCU series operates at frequencies up to 200 MHz and uses a 6-stage superscalar pipeline and Floating Point Unit (FPU) to produce up to 1,000 CoreMarks. Architectural innovations surrounding the MCU boost performance and ease of use: ST has included two independent mechanisms to reach 0-wait-state performance from both internal and external memories: using ST`s Adaptive Real-Time (ART Accelerator(TM)) for internal embedded Flash and L1 cache for both execution and data access from internal and external memories.

STMicroelectronics Unveils Thin-Film Piezoelectric MEMS Technology to Drive Growth in Customization and Personalization

STMicroelectronics announced that it is commercializing its innovative piezoelectric MEMS technology. This innovation combines the company's long-established leadership in high-volume MEMS design and manufacturing with the many new application opportunities offered by piezoelectric technology. ST's TFP (Thin-Film Piezoelectric) MEMS technology is a foundational process platform that can be readily customized, allowing ST to work with customers around the world to jointly develop specific MEMS products, optimized for particular applications. One of the first customers to take advantage of ST's TFP process is poLight, whose innovative TLens (Tuneable Lens) uses a piezoelectric actuator to change the shape of a transparent polymer film, imitating the focussing function of the human eye. This makes it the ideal solution for camera auto-focus (AF) applications, which up till now have mostly relied on large, power-hungry, and expensive Voice Coil Motors (VCM). The pilot line for ST's new TFP MEMS platform was partially funded by the European LAB4MEMS program. The technology has many important potential applications for actuators like inkjet printheads in Commercial, Industrial and 3D printing, but can also be used to develop piezo sensors in fields like energy harvesting. ST is targeting volume production for its pilot customers in mid-2015.
