Strayer Education Inc. Announces Unaudited Consolidated Financial Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended June 30, 2014; Provides Capital Expenditure and Revenue Guidance for the Year 2014

Strayer Education Inc. announced unaudited consolidated financial results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported revenue for the second quarter of 2014 was $112.7 million, a decrease of 15% from 2013. The decrease is primarily driven by lower enrollments, which were down 10% in spring academic term, and lower revenue per student, which declined by 4.7%. The decline in revenue per student is consistent with expectations, as lower tuition for new undergrads gets layered into base. Income from operations is $24 million for the second quarter of 2014, compared to $26.3 million for the same period in 2013, a decrease of 9%. Net income for the second quarter of 2014 was $13.7 million, compared to $15 million for the same period in 2013, a decrease of 9%. Diluted earnings per share also decreased 9% to $1.29, compared to $1.42 for the same period in 2013. For the six months, the company reported revenues for the 6 months ended June 30, 2014 decreased 15% to $229 million, compared to $269 million for the same period in 2013, principally due to lower enrollment, which was down on average 12% and lower revenue per student, which was down about 3%. Income from operations is $49.9 million compared to $56.2 million for the same period in 2013, a decrease of 11%. Operating income margin was up 100 basis points to 21.8%, compared to 20.8% for the same period in 2013. Net income was $28.5 million for the first half of 2014, compared to $32.2 million for the same period in 2013, a decrease of 12%. Diluted earnings per share was $2.68, compared to $3.01 for the same period in 2013, a decrease of 11%. The company generated $45.2 million from operating activities in the first 6 months of 2014 that compares to $51.6 million during the same period in 2013. Capital expenditures were $2.3 million for the 6 months ended June 30, 2014, compared to $5 million for the same period in 2013. For the year 2014, the company still expect CapEx to be in the neighborhood of $10 million on a full year basis. Revenue per student would decline 4% to 5% on a full year basis for 2014. Assuming company’s current enrollment trends continue, it would expect a similar 4% to 5% decline in revenue per student next year. That decline, however, would be offset by year-over-year growth in total enrollment, which if current trends continue, would likely occur be by the second quarter of 2015, followed by revenue growth 2 to 3 quarters later. That would result in revenue for 2015 being down in the low-single digits, again assuming company’s current enrollment trends continue.

Strayer Education Mulls Acquisitions

Strayer Education Inc. (NasdaqGS:STRA) is looking for acquisitions. Robert Silberman, Executive Chairman of Strayer Education Inc. said, "The biggest difficulty is that education is a human capital, culturally-based activity, and in general, M&A doesn't work well -- or at least in my experience, hasn't worked well in those sorts of activities, and so we're very careful as we look at that. But there are others who have been successful with acquisitions. Certainly, the Welch Institute has been a --from our standpoint, a real homerun, and so we'll continue to look at those, but probably with the same level of scrutiny that we have in the past."
