suncor energy inc (SU) Key Developments

GE and Suncor to Develop New Technologies to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

General Electric and Suncor Energy Inc. have signed two agreements which reportedly provide the opportunity for an investment of up to approximately $18 million. These agreements, involving other members from Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance, or COSIA, are reportedly expected to enable the development of new technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water usage in the oil sands. One agreement relates to a promising oil sands water treatment pilot project expected to reduce water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, while simultaneously reducing capital and operating costs for in situ oil sands operators. An existing partnership between GE, Suncor and Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES) has been extended into a Joint Industry Project within the collaboration framework of COSIA. With new support from Devon Canada Corporation and ConocoPhillips Canada Resources Corp., the group remains committed to further testing produced water treatment technologies in the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) method of extraction.

Suncor Energy and Partners Unveils Water Technology Development Center in Canada

Suncor Energy and five industry partners announced an estimated $165 million funding commitment to sanction the construction of a water technology development center, or WTDC. The WTDC, to be located at Suncor's Firebag facility, will be used to test water treatment and further develop recycling technologies. The goal of the WTDC is to shorten the timeframe needed to develop and commercialize new technologies, as well as significantly enhance existing technologies. Longer term, the WTDC is also expected to help foster deeper technical expertise in the employees who are involved in the project, which is important to Suncor as the company continues to progress its oil sands water management strategy.
