Showa Denko Strengthens High-Purity Gas Supply System in Asia

Showa Denko (SDK) has strengthened its system for supplying semiconductor-processing high-purity gases in Asia. In China, SDK increased the production capacity for high-purity ammonia at its subsidiary in Zhejiang Province in January 2014. In July 2014, the subsidiary started shipments by ISO tank container on a full scale, in addition to conventional shipments by cylinder, to meet brisk demand from customers. Furthermore, the company will step up waste-gas-disposal activities, in addition to the production and supply of high-purity gases. Thus, the company will aim to strengthen the integrated supply system and establish status as a leading high-purity gas supplier. Under its consolidated business plan PEGASUS Phase II, SDK classifies the semiconductor-processing high-purity gas business as a “Growth” business. SDK will aim to further globalize and expand the business during the Phase II period, which continues till the end of 2015.

Large Plant Factory in Yamagata Adopts SDK Group's Edge Plant Factory Unit, SHIGYO(R) Unit

Showa Denko (SDK) announced that its LED-based plant factory unit named "SHIGYO(R) Unit" has been adopted in a large-scale plant factory in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. The plant factory is operated by ENDO CORPORATION which is led by President Yasuhiko Endo and headquartered in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. SHIGYO Unit, which is adopted this time, is an all-in-one indoor plant factory system which provides optimum environment for plant growth, packaging all necessary technology and equipment for plant cultivation including the company's original high-speed plant growth technology "SHIGYO(R) Method", the company's proprietary LED lighting equipment designed to emit optimum light for SHIGYO Method, and aluminum racks for plant cultivation. SHIGYO Unit also includes after-sale technical support such as plant cultivation manuals, and is an ideal system for users to start plant factory as a new business. ENDO CORPORATION had been investigating feasibility of its entry into the plant factory business since 2012, and conducted a field test of plant cultivation with SHIGYO Method in 2013. As the results of the test, the company successfully harvested a variety of quality vegetables, and confirmed profitability of the plant factory with SHIGYO Method. Consequently, the company decided to construct a plant factory which has the area of about 2,000 m2 for plant cultivation, and a daily harvest of about 4,000 plants. The new factory will be completed in September 2014, and start operation in the following October.

Showa Denko Starts Up Ethyl Acetate Plant Using New Technology

Showa Denko started commercial operation of its new ethyl acetate plant at Oita Complex using its proprietary production process technology. Ethyl acetate is an organic solvent used in wide-ranging applications, including printing ink, paint, and adhesives for electronic devices. Its business environment continues to be severe due to the rise in raw material/fuel costs and the increase in imports. SDK therefore decided last year to change the production process by adopting a highly efficient proprietary technology, and started constructing a new plant.
