The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc., through its subsidiaries, underwrites commercial and personal property, and casualty insurance products and services in the United States. It operates in four segments: Commercial Lines, Personal Lines, Chaucer, and Other. The Commercial Lines segment provides commercial multiple peril; commercial automobile; workers’ compensation; and other commercial insurance, including AIX program business, inland marine, and surety, as well as management and professional liability, umbrella, monoline general liability, specialty property, healthcare, and miscellaneous commercial property insurance. The Personal Lines segment offers personal automobile and homeowners, as well as other personal lines, such as personal inland marine, umbrella, fire, personal watercraft, earthquake, and other miscellaneous coverages. The Chaucer segment provides marine and aviation, energy, property, and motor, as well as casualty and other coverages, which include liability coverage for professional and commercial risks, crime and professional liability coverage for financial institutions, medical malpractice, and workers’ compensation. The Other segment manages assets for unaffiliated institutions, such as insurance companies, retirement plans, and foundations. The company sells its products and services through a network of independent agents and brokers, as well as through comparative Website aggregators. The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. was founded in 1852 and is headquartered in Worcester, Massachusetts.

On November 3, 2014, Daniel T. Henry, 65, was elected to the Board of Directors of The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. Mr. Henry served as Chief Financial Officer of American Express Company from October 2007 through October 2013. Mr. Henry joined American Express in 1990 and served in a variety of senior finance roles including Comptroller. Prior to joining American Express, Mr. Henry was a Partner with Ernst & Young LLP. In addition to serving on the Company's Board, Mr. Henry is a director of Groupon Inc. and Veritiv Corporation. Mr. Henry will serve in the class of directors whose term expires at the Company's 2017 annual meeting of shareholders. Mr. Henry was also appointed to serve on the Boards Audit Committee.

The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2014. For the quarter, total Revenues were $1,265.6 million against $1,204.8 million a year ago. Income from continuing operations before income taxes was $75.3 million against $86.1 million a year ago. Income from continuing operations was $55.0 million against $61.3 million a year ago. Net income was $54.9 million or $1.22 per diluted share against $61.3 million or $1.37 per diluted share a year ago. Operating income was $47.7 million against $60.9 million a year ago. For the nine months, total Revenues were $3,782.5 million against $3,564.7 million a year ago. Income from continuing operations before income taxes was $255.1 million against $240.9 million a year ago. Income from continuing operations was $192.2 million against $180.8 million a year ago. Net income was $192.1 million or $4.28 per diluted share against $180.9 million or $4.03 per diluted share a year ago. Book value per share of $63.37 against $58.43 a year ago. Operating income was $153.1 million against $167.6 million a year ago.
