Texas Instruments Launches NFC Sensor Transponder for Industrial, Medical, Wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) Applications

Texas Instruments (TI) announced the first flexible high frequency 13.56 MHz sensor transponder [1] family. The highly integrated ultra-low-power RF430FRL15xH system-on-chip (SoC) family combines an ISO 15693-compliant Near Field Communication (NFC) interface with a programmable microcontroller (MCU), non-volatile FRAM, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and SPI or I2C interface. The dual-interface RF430FRL15xH NFC sensor transponder is optimized for use in fully passive (battery-less) or semi-active modes to achieve extended battery life in a wide range of consumer wearables, industrial, medical and asset tracking applications. Non-volatile FRAM [3] combines the speed, flexibility and endurance of SRAM with the stability and reliability of flash, while providing the industry's lowest power consumption and virtually unlimited write cycles. FRAM allows developers to create products that can quickly store sensor data and enables easy configuration of the transponder and sensors to meet any application's needs. Integrating NFC sensors into medical, industrial and asset-tracking applications Developers can now design products that require an analog or digital interface, data-logging capabilities and data transfers to an NFC-enabled reader. The RF430FRL15xH transponder acts as a sensor node for these applications and generates an IoT-ready solution when an NFC-enabled device pushes the data to the cloud. Features and benefits of TI's RF430FRL15xH NFC sensor transponders include that it supports wireless communication via the ISO/IEC 15693, ISO/IEC 18000-3 compliant RFID interface.; optimized for 1.5 V single-cell-battery-powered designs or battery-less designs that harvest energy from the RF field generated from an NFC reader at the same reading distance. Intelligent power management includes a battery switch to ensure long battery life.;14-bit sigma-delta ADC with ultra-low input current, low noise and ultra-low offset enables developers to connect up to three additional external sensors in addition to the integrated temperature sensor.; SPI or I2C interface can support digital sensors or connect the device to a host system.; Application code embedded in ROM manages RF communication and sensor readings to provide the ultimate flexibility in configuring the device. Developers can configure sampling rates, measurement thresholds and alarms.; universal non-volatile memory (FRAM) allows data storage as well as extension and adjustment of application code.; integrates a 16-bit ultra-low-power programmable MSP430™ [4] CPU core that is supported by a robust ecosystem of development tools.; and fully integrated into TI's Code Composer Studio™ (CCS) [5] and IAR's Embedded Workbench [6]® integrated development environments (IDEs).

Texas Instruments Incorporated Launches New 12-V Motor Driver Family

Texas Instruments Incorporated expanded its motor driver portfolio with a new 12-V motor driver family that reduces spin-up time to just seconds and makes tuning stepper and brushed DC motors easier than ever before. The DRV8846 incorporates a new, proprietary adaptive current control technology that automatically tunes motor performance for precise, smooth and quiet motion. The DRV8848 simplifies designs by using a simple pulse-width modulation (PWM) control interface and minimal external components. Both devices are fully protected against fault conditions, which reduces design complexity and increases system reliability in motor applications, such as 3D printers; IP security cameras; refrigerator damper control; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); home automation equipment and robotic vacuums. Key features and benefits of the DRV8846 and DRV8848: Zero tuning effort: Adaptive current regulation, available on the DRV8846, dynamically changes current regulation schemes according to load conditions, with no configuration required. This simplifies system-level tuning and debugging, which allows end equipment manufactures to get their products to market more quickly. Smooth, quiet motion: The DRV8846's 1/32 micro-stepping indexer, coupled with adaptive current regulation, provides minimal current ripple, which enables smooth, precise motion profiles and reduced acoustic noise. High integration: The DRV8848 can operate without current sense resistors, leaving supply decoupling capacitors as the only external components required for operation. More precise motor operation can be achieved by including the resistors and enabling on-chip current regulation. Full fault protection: Advanced on-chip protection, including over-current protection, thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout and diagnostics with fault condition feedback, protect both the motor driver and motor, reducing design complexity and increasing system reliability. The DRV8846 is available in a 24-pin, 4-mm x 4-mm QFN package. Suggested retail pricing in 1,000-unit quantities starts at USD 1.50. The DRV8848 is available in a 16-pin, 5-mm x 6.4-mm HTSSOP package. Suggested retail pricing in 1,000-unit quantities starts at USD 1.30.

Texas Instruments Incorporated Unveils WiLink 8 Combo Connectivity Modules

Texas Instruments Incorporated unveiled the WiLink 8 combo connectivity modules, which support Wi-Fi in the 2.4 and 5GHz bands. The new highly-integrated module family offers high throughput and extended industrial temperature range with robust Wi-Fi + Bluetooth coexistence. WiLink 8 modules are perfect for power-optimized designs for home and building automation, smart energy, gateways, wireless audio, enterprise, wearables and many more industrial and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The WiLink 8 modules and software are compatible and pre-integrated with many processors including TI's Sitara processors. The WiLink 8 family requires less hardware and RF design experience, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth software stacks and sample applications are provided, and the modules are FCC/IC/ETSI certified. By offering 2.4 and 5 GHz versions that are pin-to-pin compatible, the WiLink 8 family provides a scalable and flexible portfolio. With integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the WiLink 8 modules enable new use cases and better user experiences including: extended temperature range of -40C to 85C required for industrial applications; new 5 GHz modules which enable customers to build high performance solutions by taking advantage of the less noisy frequency band; smart energy and home gateways, which offer Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and ZigBee coexistence, can manage multiple devices through Wi-Fi multi-channel multi-role (MCMR) capabilities; 1.4x the range and up to 100 Mbps throughput with TI's WiLink 8 MRC (maximal ratio combining) and MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) technology; optimization for low power applications with low idle connect current consumption; and audio streaming for home entertainment applications with both Wi-Fi and dual-mode Bluetooth/Bluetooth low energy. The WiLink 8 modules complement several TI platforms to deliver system solutions for manufacturers including WiLink 8 module-based evaluation boards (2.4 GHz-WL1835MODCOM8 and 5 GHz -WL1837MODCOM8) that are compatible with the AM335x EVM and AM437x EVM. Additionally, the WiLink 8 modules, which offer Bluetooth and Bluetooth low energy dual-mode technology, are compatible with TI's Bluetooth portfolio that allows developers to create a complete end-to-end application.
