telecom italia spa (TIT) Key Developments

Telecom Italia Expands FTTC Network to Gela

Telecom Italia has launched its fibre-optic broadband service in the southern Sicilan town of Gela. The service, already available in many parts of the town, will be expanded to 20,000 households, or 80% of the population, by the end of 2014, with the operator installing around 67 Km of cables in total to connect over 120 street cabinets, providing customers with internet connections at speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The company hopes to connect 90% of Gela's population by 2015. Prices for its fibre optic service are available at the promotional rates of EUR 29 per month for local residents and EUR 35 for business for the first 6 and 12 months respectively.

Telecom Italia and Vodafone Italia Receives Southern Italy Contracts

Telecom Italia and Vodafone Italia have been awarded contracts amounting to EUR 157 million to build and upgrade broadband networks in the south of Italy. As part of the development programme, Telecom Italia will carry out a EUR 93 million project to bring fibre-optic services to Campania, Sicily, Calabria and Puglia. Vodafone Italia's EUR 64 million contract involves upgrading the telecoms network in Apulia and Calabria as well expanding a semiconductor plant in Catania.

Telecom Italia Does Not Rule Out Merger Of TIM Participacoes

Telecom Italia S.p.A. (BIT:TIT) does not rule out merger of TIM Participacoes S.A. (BOVESPA:TIMP3) with other entities. "We can't rule out anything but we are not focused on this at the moment," Telecom Italia Chief Executive Officer Marco Patuano said when asked about talk of a potential tie-up between its TIM Participacoes (TIMP3.SA) unit and Global Village Telecom (Holding) S.A. Telefonica has been asked by the antitrust authorities to resolve what they see as this conflict of interest by mid-2015, prompting widespread speculation about possible mergers and breakups in the Brazilian telecoms market. Telefonica had hoped Oi SA (BOVESPA:OIBR4) would lead the joint bid since it is the only Brazilian company involved, the sources said. Telecom Italia, however, is in favor of keeping its stake in TIM because it accounts for one third of its sales, but does not rule out a sale, Chairman Giuseppe Recchi said in early June 2014. A merger between TIM and Global Village could be a headache for Telefonica because it would create a stronger competitor to its local unit Vivo. Other Telecom Italia shareholders, led by Marco Fossati who owns nearly 5% say merging TIM with Global Village would create more value. During the week ending July 18, 2014, TIM denied being in talks with rivals Grupo Oi and Global Village for a combination or a takeover. Telecom Italia shares were down 0.6% at €0.874. Shares in TIM rose 1%.
