Toyota Motor Corp. Launches Fuel-Cell Vehicle in Japan

Toyota Motor Corp. started selling its Mirai fuel-cell vehicle in Japan. The company does not plan to sell the car at showrooms or hold a launch event, as the current annual production capacity stands at 700 units and it takes up to two years to get it delivered to a buyer. The number of preorders for the vehicle stands at some 1,000 units, already surpassing Toyota's yearly sales target of 400 units. Toyota will work on preparations for a production increase, aiming to sell the car overseas from summer next year. At two plants in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, the company produces key parts of the Mirai, including the fuel-cell that generates electricity by a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, or assembles the vehicle. It is manually assembled one at a time. The four-seater Mirai sedan is priced at ¥7,236,000, but the figure falls to around JPY 5.2 million after Japanese government subsidies. The fuel-cell vehicle is being ordered mainly by public offices and companies.
