Toshiba Corporation and Cisco Intend to Engage on Internet of Things (Iot) Strategy

Toshiba Corporation and Cisco announced that they are collaborating on new ways to utilize the Internet of Everything that can dramatically improve processes, productivity and experiences in manufacturing, transportation and city environments. Growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) (TM) market has accelerated dramatically in the past year throughout a wide range of industries and public sector organizations. The Internet of Everything (IoE) connects people, processes, data and things through the Internet, turning data generated from connected devices into actionable intelligence that can improve processes, decision-making and scenario planning for businesses and people. The Internet of Everything also is creating a greater need for fog computing, which stores and processes data at physical locations closer to devices and operations or the edge instead of handling all processes in the cloud. This global collaboration brings together the Cisco Fog Computing(TM) network environment featuring Cisco's network-wide security solution with the Toshiba Group's endpoint management technology. The joint effort will help monitor and maintain multiple devices, stream computing technology for high-speed information processing collected from devices, and provide storage technology to accumulate information generated with M2M technology.

Toshiba Corporation Launches the TMPV760 Series

Toshiba Corporation announced that it will expand its line-up of image recognition processors for automotive applications with the launch of the TMPV760 series. Sample shipments of the first device, TMPV7608XBG will start in January 2015, with mass production scheduled for December 2016 onwards. With TMPV7608XBG, the company is supporting the realization of next generation Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Support for standard ADAS features includes AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking), TSR (Traffic Sign Recognition), LDW (Lane Departure Warning) and LKA (Lane Keeping Assist), HBA (High Beam Assistance), FCW (Forward Collision Warning), plus new applications that include TLR (Traffic Light Recognition) and AEB pedestrian (during both day and night), which will become part of the Euro NCAP testing program in 2018. TMPV7608XBG integrates two new Enhanced CoHOG accelerators that provide far higher accuracy image recognition at night. Connected to multiple, Full HD cameras, the processors analyzes color gradients in supplied images and achieves a night-time detection rate of pedestrians that matches the day-time recognition rate of the company's current devices. TMPV7608XBG also supports a Structure from Motion (SfM) accelerator that realizes 3D reconstruction using the input stream of a monocular camera, and that can detect motionless obstacles on a road surface that are not detected by conventional pattern recognition. In parallel, the company has also launched a system power management IC, TC9580FTG, for optimizing TMPV760 series power management. Sample shipments start from the end of this month, with mass production scheduled to start in November 2015. TMPV7608XBG integrates new Enhanced CoHOG accelerators that make use of luminance- and color-based image information. This enhancement significantly boosts recognition accuracy, especially at night and scenes with low luminance differences between objects and the background. In addition, its high-speed computation capability can shorten the recognition time of pedestrians and vehicles. TMPV7608XBG uses the SfM in 3D reconstructions and estimations of the positions and sizes of obstacles not detected by conventional pattern recognition. It accelerates the overall detection speed by narrowing down candidates for further analysis during a pre-processing phase.

Toshiba Corporation Expands its Lineup of Application Processors for Wearable Devices

Toshiba Corporation announced the latest addition to its TZ1000 series of ApP Lite application processors for wearable devices. The new device, TZ1021MBG, integrates a processor and Flash memory, without the Bluetooth Low Energy and accelerometer that Toshiba integrated into the previous TZ1001MBG. The result is a smaller, slimmer package that is ideal for wearable devices. Sample shipments will start within this month, with mass production scheduled to start in March 2015. TZ1021MBG will be showcased at Electronica 2014 in Munich for the four days from November 11. Toshiba's application processor TZ1021MBG for wearable devices. There has been an explosion of interest in services that monitor activity levels and durations, as tools to help prevent lifestyle diseases, promote exercise and improve nutrition. It has increased demand for the wearable devices that these services depend on. Toshiba's new application processor integrates highly sensitive analog to digital converters (ADCs) that are well suited for measuring weak biomedical signals such as the pulse and the heart's electrical activity (like an electro-cardiogram). The processor also offers an original low power consumption design, allowing use in wearable devices that require long battery run times. Toshiba is also expanding its TZ1000 series by adding functionality to the basic TZ1001MBG: TZ1031MBG adds a gyroscope and TZ1011MBG adds a gyroscope and a magnetometer. Key features: Embedded ARM Cortex-M4F processorHigh performance ARM Cortex-M4F with DSP and floating point processing unit allows combination of data from multiple sensors, both internal and external, to improve accuracy (sensor fusion). Highly sensitive ADCsThe new product integrates highly sensitive ADCs that can convert weak biomedical signals such as the pulse and the heart's electrical activity from external sensors into digital data, and deliver them to the internal processor. Applications: wearable devices, such as activity monitors, smart watches, bracelet- and glasses-type devices.
