Toyota Motor Corporation Launches Two New Engines in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation has launched a pair of brand-new engines in Japan, which will be included in 14 different variants by 2015. One of the two engines is a 1.3-litre, while the smaller engine, a 1.0-litre, was developed in collaboration with Daihatsu. Both engines can be fitted with stop-start tech. When the engine is equipped with stop-start, the 1.3 litre engine is to offer around a 15% increase in economy, while the 1.0-litre will increase economy by around 30%.

Toyota to Release 14 New Fuel-Efficient Gasoline Engines in 2014 and 2015

Toyota unveiled two newly developed gasoline (petrol) engines - a 1.3-litre motor with 4 cylinders and a 1.0-litre unit with 3 cylinders - that will underpin a total of 14 new engine variants that the automaker plans to introduce globally this year and next. Toyota claims that the new engines, which achieve improved thermal efficiency by leveraging combustion and loss-reduction technologies, will enable fuel efficiency improvements of at least 10% from current vehicles. When paired with stop-start technology, which shuts the engine down at stop lights, the results are expected to be even better, with the 1.3-litre engine likely to deliver fuel economy gains of 15% and the 1.0-litre engine as much as 30%. The new engines employ the Atkinson cycle, which is normally used in dedicated hybrid engines. The Atkinson cycle basically provides an increased expansion ratio and reduces waste heat through a high compression ratio, enhancing the engine's maximum thermal efficiency. The 1.3-litre engine achieves a compression ratio of 13.5 and a thermal efficiency rate of 38%, while the 1.0-litre engine, developed jointly with Daihatsu, has a compression ratio of 11.5 and a thermal efficiency rate of 37%. The outgoing engines have thermal efficiency rates of 35%. Higher thermal efficiency means that more energy from internal combustion is captured to power the wheels and less is lost through heat.

Toyota Reports Global Sales Results for the Fiscal Year 2014
