Transat A.T. Inc. operates an integrated tourism company in the Americas and Europe. The company engages in the organization, marketing, and distribution of holiday travel services in various packages, including airline seats and air-only formats. It also operates as outgoing and incoming tour operator by bundling services bought in Canada and abroad and reselling them in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom through travel agencies and Web. Transat AT, Inc. announced that it is eliminating 47 office staff positions. The company also announced that its president Allen Graham, who will retire on June 30, 2013. Graham will be succeeded by Jean-François Lemay, vice-president of human resources and talent management for parent firm Transat A.T. But his title will be general manager of the airline rather than president. Lemay, a labour lawyer for 30 years, has worked closely with Transat for many years, but joined the company officially in October 2011. He became president and CEO of Air Transat in 2002.
Transat A.T. Inc. will add Boeing B737 narrow-body jets to Air Transat's fleet, which currently comprises Airbus A310 and A330 wide-body aircraft, beginning in 2014. In so doing, the company will internalize its medium-haul operations outbound from Canada to sun destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Florida, for which it has relied on a third-party partner since 2003. Some of the new aircraft will be permanently attached to the fleet. In winter, when demand on sun destination routes is higher, additional aircraft will be introduced on a seasonal basis. Eventually, Transat plans to operate five narrow-body aircraft permanently and six seasonal aircraft in winter.
Transat A.T. Inc. announced earnings results for the first quarter ended January 31, 2013. The company posted revenues of CAD 805.7 million for the quarter ended January 31, 2013, compared with CAD 829.3 million in 2012, a decrease of CAD 23.6 million or 2.8%. The decrease in revenues is mainly attributable to the Corporation's decision to reduce capacity on its markets (Sun, transatlantic and France), hence a 12.6% reduction in the number of travellers. The Corporation recorded an operating loss before amortization and depreciation of CAD 21.0 million, compared with CAD 31.8 million in 2012 and a net loss of CAD 15.1 million or CAD 0.39 per share on a diluted basis, compared with CAD 29.5 million or CAD 0.77 per share on a diluted basis in 2012. Before non-operating items, the company reported an adjusted after-tax loss of CAD 21.6 million in 2013 or CAD 0.56 per share on a diluted basis, compared with CAD 29.9 million or CAD 0.79 per share on a diluted basis in 2012. The company expects better results than last year for its second quarter.
