UIL Holdings Corporation, through its subsidiaries, operates in the regulated utility businesses. The company operates in the Electric Distribution, Electric Transmission, and Gas Distribution segments. It is involved in the purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes in the Southwestern Connecticut. As of December 31, 2013, the company had approximately 317,000 electricity customers. It has transmission lines consist of approximately 104 circuit miles of overhead lines and approximately 28 circuit miles of underground lines; and owns and operates 27 bulk electric supply substations with a capacity of 1,886 megavoltampere (MVA) and 8 distribution substations with a capacity of 42 MVA, as well as 3,287 pole-line miles of overhead distribution lines and 199 distribution conduit-bank miles. The company is also involved in the transportation, distribution, and sale of natural gas to approximately 395,000 customers in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. It has natural gas systems that comprise approximately 4,303 miles and 744 miles of distribution pipeline in Connecticut and Massachusetts; operates and maintains various gate stations; and owns and operates a liquefied natural gas plant that stores approximately 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The company was founded in 1899 and is headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut.

UIL Holdings Corporation reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2013. For the quarter, the company reported net income of $40.4 million, or $0.71 per diluted share, an increase of $11.6 million, compared to the fourth quarter 2012. For the year, the company reported operating revenues of $1,618.716 million compared to $1,486.501 million a year ago. Operating income was $240.489 million compared to $230.590 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $184.625 million compared to $178.567 million a year ago. Net income was $115.317 million compared to $103.701 million a year ago. Net income attributable to the company was $115.265 million compared to $103.637 million a year ago. Diluted earnings per share were $2.18 compared to $2.02 a year ago. The company's consolidated earnings for 2014 are expected to be in the range of $122 million to $134 million, or $2.15 to $2.35 per diluted share, compared to actual 2013 consolidated earnings of $115.3 million, or $2.18 per diluted share. The 2014 guidance reflects a full year's dilution from the UIL equity issuance on October 2, 2013, whereas the 2013 actual results only include dilution from that date through the end of 2013. While this does not affect net income, the approximate dilutive impacts on 2014 and 2013 earnings per share are $0.25 per diluted share and $0.06 per diluted share, respectively.
