Veeco Instruments Inc., together with its subsidiaries, designs, manufactures, and markets thin film equipment to make light emitting diodes (LEDs), flexible organic LED (OLED) displays, hard-disk drives, solar cells, power semiconductors, and wireless components worldwide. The company operates through two segments, LED & Solar, and Data Storage. The LED & Solar segment designs and manufactures metal organic chemical vapor deposition, and molecular beam epitaxy systems and components for the manufacturers of LEDs, wireless components, power semiconductors, and concentrator photovoltaics, as well as for research and development applications. This segment also offers atomic layer deposition technology used by the manufacturers of OLED displays, as well as for semiconductor and solar markets applications. The Data Storage segment designs and manufactures various systems, such as ion beam etch; ion beam deposition; diamond-like carbon; physical vapor deposition; chemical vapor deposition; and slicing, dicing, and lapping systems to create thin film magnetic heads that read and write data on hard disk drives. This segment offers systems to hard drive customers for optical coatings, micro-electro mechanical systems, magnetic sensors, and ultraviolet lithography applications. The company was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Plainview, New York.

Veeco Instruments Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net sales of $95.122 million compared to $97.435 million a year ago. Operating loss was $15.771 million compared to $6.812 million a year ago. Loss before income taxes was $15.699 million compared to $6.576 million a year ago. Net loss was $15.211 million or $0.39 per diluted share compared to $4.081 million or $0.11 per diluted share a year ago. Adjusted LBITA was $6.980 million compared to $2.224 million a year ago. Non-GAAP net loss was $6.108 million or $0.16 per diluted share compared to $1.254 million or $0.03 per diluted share a year ago. For six months, the company reported net sales of $185.963 million compared to $159.216 million a year ago. Operating income was $2.856 million compared to operating loss of $26.436 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $3.092 million compared to loss before tax of $26.008 million a year ago. Net income was $3.949 million or $0.10 per diluted share compared to net loss of $14.152 million or $0.37 per diluted share a year ago. Adjusted LBITA was $9.704 million compared to $17.902 million a year ago.
