Visa Inc. Launches New Visa Token Services

Visa Inc. launched its new Visa Token Services. In the tokenization process, a series of characters replaces the cardholder's primary account number, meaning the actual cardholder number is never exposed to a merchant's network. This makes data breaches less damaging, since tokens can't be used to create counterfeit cards. The card brands provide the tokenization services and pass the issued tokens along to processors, like First Data, that provide payments services on behalf of the issuers.

Visa Inc. Launches Innovative Token Service

Visa Inc. announced the launch of Visa Token Service -- an innovative technology that provides a secure environment to help drive innovation in online and mobile commerce. Visa Token Service replaces sensitive payment account information found on plastic cards with a digital account number or "token". Because "tokens" do not carry a consumer's payment account details, such as the 16-digit account number, they can be safely stored by online merchants or on mobile devices to facilitate ecommerce and mobile payments. Visa Token Service will be available to Visa Inc. issuing financial institutions globally, starting with U.S. financial institutions next month, and followed by a phased roll-out overseas beginning in 2015. The technology has been designed to support payments with mobile devices using all major mobile platforms. Visa Token Service provides a seamless experience for consumers making purchases online and with mobile devices, while preserving the integrity of the Visa payment transaction. Key benefits of Visa Token Service include: Consumer Protection: Tokens replace the 16-digit account information found on plastic cards with a numeric substitute. This new identifier is called a digital account number and it can facilitate payment transactions without sharing sensitive personal account information. Customized Usage: Tokens can be limited to specific merchants, mobile devices or types of purchases -- providing another form of innovation and security. Convenience and Cost Effectiveness: Tokens linked to lost or stolen mobile devices can be instantly reissued without changing account numbers or reissuing plastic cards.

Visa Develops New Software to Detect Unauthorized Use of Credit Cards at Gas Stations

Visa has developed a new software Visa Transaction Advisor that will identify whether someone is using a stolen, lost or counterfeit credit card to fill up at gas stations. About 25,000 gas stations have already partnered with Visa, while Chevron, an early trial case, has reported a 23% drop in fraud at the pump. The fraud protection system analyzes 500 pieces of data about cardholders, such as location and past transaction history, to create a risk score between 0 and 100 for each card being used. Service stations that use the system can set a risk threshold and if the user's card has a risk score higher than that set standard the user will be prompted to meet the store's attendant inside the station.
