Department of Defense Awards SGI A Supercomputer Contract

SGI announced that the Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded SGI a supercomputer contract as part of a technology insertion for their High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP). The contract, part of the DoD's ongoing initiative to improve HPC resources, is intended to bolster the compute capabilities of the DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), to improve mission-critical research and drive innovation throughout the United States Armed Forces. The HPCMP was implemented to help the DoD analyze and overcome its most significant challenges, to improve how the DoD operates through the research of new theories, and to acquire new technology with real-time analysis of critical information to enable more informed decisions. The ERDC DSRC will deploy an SGI(r) ICE(TM) X supercomputer and an SGI(r) InfiniteStorage(TM) 5600 high performance storage system, allowing DoD researchers to conduct crucial research at ERDC, specializing in the Tri-Service Reliance areas of civil engineering, environmental quality and environmental science. ERDC will deploy an ICE X HPC system, utilizing the latest Intel(r) Xeon(r) E5-2600 v3 product family to achieve peak compute power. The deployment also includes 12 petabytes of storage through an SGI InfiniteStorage 5600 based on NetApp(r) E-Series technology, running Intel(r) Enterprise Edition for Lustre(r) software to allow for faster access to crucial information.

SGI Introduces SGI(R) UV(TM) for SAP HANA(R)

SGI introduced SGI(R) UV(TM) for SAP HANA(R). It is a purpose-built, in-memory computing appliance for growing environments running the SAP HANA platform. SGI UV for SAP HANA utilizes a unique scale-up, single-node architecture designed to deliver performance at unprecedented platform capacities. The simplicity of a single-node will allow enterprises to run applications free from the overhead of clustered appliances and reduce installation time -- there are no cluster nodes, cluster network, or SAN to configure and administer. And there will not be a need for database partitioning or re-balancing I/O when increasing the size of the SGI appliance. Operational costs are reduced, high availability is streamlined, and capacity can be increased seamlessly with near-linear performance. SGI UV for SAP HANA features the SGI UV 300H, a new offering in the SGI(R) UV(TM) server line built for SAP HANA that couples seventh generation SGI technology and over 100 patents for in-memory computing with Intel(R) Xeon(R) E7 8890 v2 15-core processors. The appliance is certified by SAP at 4- or 8- sockets with up to 6TB of shared memory using 32GB DIMMS (capacity doubles using 64GB DIMMS) using ultrafast SGI NUMAlink(R) 7 interconnects. SGI UV 300H architecture is designed to scale to 32 sockets and 24TB of shared memory as a single-node system. NetApp(R) E2700 RAID arrays provide backup of data and log files in the event of power loss.
