Whirlpool Corp. Announces Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended June 30, 2014; Revises Earnings Guidance for the Full Year of 2014

Whirlpool Corp. announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net sales of $4,682 million compared with $4,748 million for the same period a year ago. Operating profit was $291 million compared with $328 million for the same period a year ago. Earnings before income taxes were $235 million compared with $245 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings available to company was $179 million or $2.25 per diluted share compared with $198 million or $2.44 per diluted share for the same period a year ago, increased mainly driven by improved product price and mix, ongoing cost productivity and the benefit of cost and capacity-reduction initiatives. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $2.62 per share. For the six months, the company reported net sales of $9,045 million compared with $8,996 million for the same period a year ago. Operating profit was $572 million compared with $582 million for the same period a year ago. Earnings before income taxes were $449 million compared with $435 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings available to company was $339 million or $4.27 per diluted share compared with $450 million or $5.56 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. Cash used in operating activities was $368 million compared with $196 million for the same period a year ago. Capital expenditures were $265 million compared with $180 million for the same period a year ago. Free cash flow was negative $622 million against $373 million for the same period in the last year. The new Whirlpool(R) HybridCare(TM) clothes dryer WED99HED with Hybrid Heat Pump technology is designed to regenerate energy during the drying cycle to reduce energy consumption while providing dryer speed and performance flexibility. Compared to typical dryers that use large amounts of energy in the form of venting hot, moist air, the Whirlpool brand HybridCare(TM) dryer is a ventless heat pump dryer that uses a refrigeration system to dry and recycle the same air. HybridCare(TM) technology uses advanced sensors tuned to manage energy consumption and temperature to deliver drying performance and energy savings. P&G and Whirlpool Corporation announced the introduction of SWASH(TM). SWASH(TM) is a revolutionary at-home clothing care system that reduces wrinkles, refreshes fabric, restores the fit lost after wear and preserves clothing, in just ten minutes with the push of a button. The SWASH(TM) system, designed to fit into a living space such as a bedroom or closet, allows people to reduce or eliminate ironing, save on dry cleaning and better care for and preserve clothes -- even hard to care for favorite pieces. The SWASH(TM) system uses an integrated tension system to gently hold clothes in place, while an advanced spray technology applies a uniquely designed solution to the clothing from the SWASH PODS(TM) cup. Then, a rapid thermal drying function combines an express heat system with airflow recirculation to dry clothes quickly. The SWASH(TM) system plugs directly into a standard 120-volt wall outlet and requires no water, plumbing, pipes, vents, special hook-ups or professional installation.
