KT Corporation provides telecommunications services in Korea. As an integrated telecommunications service provider, its principal services include: mobile telecommunications services; telephone services, including local, domestic long-distance and international long-distance fixed-line and VoIP telephone services and interconnection services to other telecommunications companies; broadband Internet access service and other Internet-related services, including IP-TV services; credit card and other financial services through KT Capital Co., Ltd. and BC Card Co., Ltd.; automobile rental services through KT Rental Co., Ltd.; and various other services, including leased line service and other data communication service, satellite service and information technology, real estate business, satellite TV service, media contents business and network services, such as cloud computing services. Services Mobile Services The company provides mobile services based on W-CDMA technology and LTE technology. It offers HSDPA-based IMT-2000 services, which are third-generation, high-capacity wireless Internet and video multimedia communications services based on W-CDMA wireless network standards. In January 2012, the company also began offering 4G LTE services under the brand name ‘WARP,’ following the termination of its 2G PCS services. The company completed the expansion of its 4G LTE service coverage nationwide in October 2012. The company competes with SK Telecom, a mobile service provider, and LG U+. As of December 31, 2012, the company had approximately 16.5 million subscribers. The company markets its mobile services primarily through independent exclusive dealers located throughout Korea. As of December 31, 2012, there were approximately 2,300 shops managed by its independent exclusive dealers. In 2007, the company established a wholly-owned subsidiary, KT M&S Co., Ltd. that operates approximately 140 customer plazas that engages in mobile service sales activities, as well as provides a one-stop shop for a range of other services and products that the company offers. The company also operates a Web site to promote and advertise its products and services to the general public and in particular to younger customers who are more familiar with the Internet. Telephone Services Fixed-line Telephone Services: The company utilizes its extensive nationwide telephone network to provide fixed-line telephone services, which consist of local, domestic long-distance, international long-distance services and land-to-mobile interconnection services. The company’s telephone network includes exchanges, long-distance transmission equipment and fiber optic and copper cables. The company’s domestic long-distance cable network is made up of fiber optic cable and can carry both voice and data transmissions. Digital systems permit a range of voice, text and data applications to be transmitted simultaneously on the same network. Internet Services Broadband Internet Access Service: The company has a nationwide network of 584,932 kilometers of fiber optic cable network in Korea. The company’s principal Internet access services include: ADSL, VDSL, Ethernet and FTTH services under the ‘olleh Internet’ brand name; wireless LAN service (or WiFi) under the ‘ollehWiFi’ brand name, which is designed to integrate fixed-line and wireless services by offering high speed wireless Internet access to laptops, PDAs and smartphones in hot-spot zones and olleh Internet service in fixed-line environments. OllehWiFi enables subscribers to access the Internet at up to 150 Mbps. The company sponsored approximately 111,990 hot-spot zones nationwide for wireless connection as of December 31, 2012; and olleh 4G WiBro Internet access service, which enables two-way wireless broadband Internet access to portable computers, mobile phones and other portable devices at a speed averaging 5 Mbps per user. The company had 8.0 million fixed-line olleh Internet subscribers and approximately 183,000 ollehWiFi service subscribers, as of December 31, 2012.
