Business Lines and Strategic Business Units (SBUs) The company’s business is organized into six market-oriented SBUs: US (the United States), Andes (Chile, Colombia, and Argentina), Brazil, MCAC (Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean), EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), and Asia. Within its six SBUs, the company has two lines of business, Generation and Utilities. Generation This business line owns and/or operates power plants to generate and sell power to customers, such as utilities, industrial users, and other intermediaries. The company owns and/or operates a generation portfolio of 29,289 megawatt (MW), excluding the generation capabilities of its integrated utilities. The company owns and operates 9,216 MW (4,959 proportional MW) of renewable generation, including hydro, wind, energy storage, biomass, and landfill gas. Utilities This business line owns and/or operates utilities to generate or purchase, distribute, transmit, and sell electricity to end-user customers in the residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental sectors within a defined service area. In certain circumstances, the company’s utilities also generate and sell electricity on the wholesale market. The company’s 9 utility businesses distribute power to approximately 11 million people in 4 countries. These businesses also include generation capacity totaling 7,870 MW (7,458 proportional MW). These businesses have various structures, ranging from integrated utility to transmission and distribution businesses. In general, its utilities sell electricity directly to end-users, such as homes and businesses, and bill customers directly. The company’s integrated utilities, such as Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) and The Dayton Power & Light Company (DP&L), operate as the sole distributor of electricity within their respective jurisdictions. Its businesses own and operate all of the businesses and facilities necessary to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. SBUs US SBU The company’s US SBU has 14 generation facilities and 2 integrated utilities in the United States. IPALCO Enterprises, Inc. (IPALCO) US Utilities: IPALCO owns IPL. IPL is engaged primarily in generating, transmitting, distributing, and selling electric energy to approximately 470,000 customers in the city of Indianapolis and neighboring areas within the state of Indiana. IPL has a right to provide electric service to those customers. IPL’s service area covers approximately 528 square miles with a population of approximately 919,000. IPL owns and operates four generating stations. Two of the generating stations are primarily coal-fired. The third station has a combination of units that use coal (baseload capacity), natural gas, and/or oil (peaking capacity) for fuel to produce electricity. The fourth station is a small peaking station that uses gas-fired combustion turbine technology for the production of electricity. IPL’s net electric generation capacity for winter is 3,272 MW and net summer capacity is 3,148 MW. Regulatory Framework: IPL is subject to regulation by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission with respect to IPL’s services and facilities; retail rates and charges; the issuance of long-term securities; and certain other matters. In addition, IPL’s rates include various adjustment mechanisms, including those to reflect changes in fuel costs to generate electricity or purchased power prices, referred to as Fuel Adjustment Charges, and for the timely recovery of costs incurred to comply with environmental laws and regulations referred to as Environmental Compliance Cost Recovery Adjustment. Environmental Matters: IPL has 2,623 MW of coal-fired generation, which is subject to Mercury and Air Toxics Standards regulation. DPL Inc. (DPL) DPL is an energy holding company whose principal subsidiaries include DP&L; DPL Energy, LLC (DPLE); and DPL Energy Resources, Inc. (DPLER).
