Alliance One International, Inc. is engaged in purchasing, processing, storing, and selling leaf tobacco. The company purchases tobacco primarily in the United States, Africa, Europe, South America, and Asia for sale to customers primarily in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The company also provides agronomy expertise for growing leaf tobacco. It also sells processed tobacco and provides processing and related services to the manufacturers of tobacco products. The company deals primarily in flue-cured, burley, and oriental tobaccos that are used in international brand cigarettes. In the year ended March 31, 2014, the company completed the formation of a joint venture in Brazil with China Tobacco International, Inc. In Brazil, the company contracts to purchase a supplier's tobacco crop at the market price per grade at the time of harvest based on the quality of the tobacco delivered. Pursuant to these purchase contracts, the company provides suppliers with fertilizer and other materials necessary to grow tobacco and might guarantee the Brazilian rural credit loans to suppliers to finance the crop. The company processes tobacco in approximately 35 owned and third-party facilities worldwide, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Guatemala, India, Tanzania, the United States, Malawi, Thailand, Germany, Indonesia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. The company also sells a small amount of processed and unthreshed flue-cured and burley tobacco in loose-leaf and bundle form to certain customers. The company ships tobacco to manufacturers of cigarettes and other consumer tobacco products located in approximately 90 countries worldwide as designated by these manufacturers. Customers For the year ended March 31, 2014, Philip Morris International, Inc. and China Tobacco International, Inc. accounted for approximately 10% of the company’s revenues. Seasonality The purchasing and processing activities of the company’s tobacco business are seasonal. Flue-cured tobacco grown in the United States is purchased, processed, and marketed during the five-month period beginning in July and ending in November. The U.S. grown burley tobacco is purchased, processed, and marketed from late November through January or February. Tobacco grown in Brazil is purchased, processed, and marketed from January through July and in Africa from April through September. At March 31, the end of the company’s fiscal year (year ending March 2014), the seasonal components of its working capital reflect primarily the operations related to foreign grown tobacco. History Alliance One International, Inc., a Virginia corporation, was founded in 1904.
