Associated Banc-Corp operates as the holding company for Associated Bank, National Association that provides a range of banking and nonbanking products and services to individuals and businesses. The company operates through approximately 240 banking offices serving approximately 150 communities, primarily within its 3-state branch footprint (Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota). As of December 31, 2012, the company owned 1 nationally chartered commercial bank headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin and serving local communities across the upper Midwest; 1 nationally chartered trust company headquartered in Wisconsin; and 24 limited purpose banking and nonbanking subsidiaries. Segments The company operates through three segments, Commercial Banking, Consumer Banking and Risk Management and Shared Services. Commercial Banking This segment offers loans, deposits, and related banking services to businesses (including regional middle market and larger commercial businesses, governments/municipalities, metro or niche markets, and companies with specialized borrowing needs, such as financial institutions, or asset-based borrowers), which primarily include business checking and other business deposit products, business loans, lines of credit, commercial real estate financing, construction loans, letters of credit, revolving credit arrangements, and insurance related products and services, business credit cards, equipment and machinery leases, and the support to deliver, fund and manage such banking services. To further support business customers and correspondent financial institutions, the company provides safe deposit and night depository services, cash management, risk management, and international banking, as well as check clearing, safekeeping, and other banking-based services. Consumer Banking This segment consists of lending and deposit gathering to individuals and small businesses and also provides various fiduciary, investment management, advisory, and corporate agency services to assist customers in building, investing, or protecting their wealth, including securities brokerage, and trust/asset management. This segment offers various loan and deposit products to retail customers, including home equity loans and lines of credit, residential mortgage loans and mortgage refinancing, personal and installment loans, checking, savings, money market deposit accounts, IRA accounts, certificates of deposit, and safe deposit boxes; small business checking and deposit products, loans, lines of credit; fixed and variable annuities, full-service, discount and on-line investment brokerage; and trust/asset management, investment management, administration of pension, profit-sharing and other employee benefit plans, personal trusts, and estate planning. Risk Management and Shared Services This segment includes Corporate Risk Management, Finance, Treasury, Facilities Management, Operations and Technology functions, which are primary shared functions. Loans Portfolio Commercial real estate primarily includes commercial-based loans to investors that are secured by commercial income properties or multifamily projects. Commercial real estate loans are intermediate to long-term financings. Loans of this type are primarily secured by commercial income properties or multifamily projects. Real estate construction loans are primarily short-term or interim loans that provide financing for the acquisition or development of commercial income properties, multifamily projects or residential development, both single family and condominium. Real estate construction loans are made to developers and project managers. Retail loans include home equity and installment loans. Home equity consists of home equity lines, as well as home equity loans, approximately half of which are first lien positions, while installment loans consist of educational loans, as well as short-term and other personal installment loans. Residential mortgage loans include conventional first lien home mortgages and the company limits the maximum loan to 80% of collateral value without credit enhancement (PMI insurance).
