water injectors, tying them into the existing infrastructure and commissioning the 75 Mbbl/d of water injection facilities. BP is the operator and the company holds a 44% working interest. Mad Dog Phase 2: Mad Dog Phase 2 would be a spar development with all subsea production and injection wells and includes water injection capability to provide support to the east, west and south of the field. ALUMINIUM CUSTOMER SECTOR GROUP The company’s Aluminium CSG is a portfolio of assets at three stages of the aluminium value chain: mining bauxite, refining bauxite into alumina, and smelting alumina into aluminium metal. Boddington/Worsley: Boddington/Worsley is an integrated bauxite mining/alumina refining operation. The Boddington bauxite mine in Western Australia supplies bauxite ore to the Worsley alumina refinery through a 62 kilometer long conveying system. The company owns 86% of the mine and the refinery. It is its integrated bauxite mining/alumina refining asset. Mineracao Rio do Norte: The company owns 14.8% of Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN), which owns and operates a bauxite mine in Brazil. Alumar: Alumar is an integrated alumina refinery/aluminium smelter. The company owns 36% of the Alumar refinery and 40% of the smelter. Alcoa operates both facilities. Hillside and Bayside: The company’s Hillside and Bayside smelters are located at Richards Bay, South Africa. Hillside has a capacity of approximately 715 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa). Bayside has smelting capacity of approximately 95 ktpa. Hillside imports alumina from its Worsley refinery and both Hillside and Bayside source power from Eskom, the South African state utility. Mozal: The company owns 47.1% of and operates the Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique, which has a total capacity of approximately 563 ktpa. Mozal sources power generated by Hydro Cahora Basa via Motraco, a transmission joint venture between Eskom and the national electricity utilities of Mozambique and Swaziland. Development projects Worsley Efficiency and Growth project: In 2008, the company announced the Board’s approval of an expansion project to increase the capacity of the Worsley refinery from 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of alumina to 4.6 mtpa (100 per cent capacity) through expanded mining operations at Boddington, additional refinery capacity and upgraded port facilities. Guinea Alumina: The company has a one-third interest in a joint venture that is undertaking a feasibility study into the construction of a 10 mtpa bauxite mine, an alumina refinery with processing capacity of approximately 3.3 mtpa and associated infrastructure approximately 110 kilometers from the port of Kamsar in Guinea. BASE METALS CUSTOMER SECTOR GROUP The company’s Base Metals CSG produces copper, silver, lead, and uranium, as well as zinc. Its portfolio of mining operations includes the Escondida mine in Chile, and Olympic Dam in South Australia. The company markets five primary products: copper concentrates, copper cathodes, uranium oxide, lead concentrates, and zinc concentrates. The company sells majority its copper, lead and zinc concentrates to smelters. It sells majority of its copper cathode production to wire rod mills, brass mills, and casting plants. The company sells uranium oxide to electricity generating utilities, principally in western Europe, North America, and north Asia. The company has six assets, with Pampa Norte having two operations: Escondida: The company’s 57.5% owned and operated Escondida mine is a copper producer. The company is exploring alternative sources, including further desalination of seawater. Olympic Dam: Olympic Dam produces copper cathode and uranium oxide, as well as refines smaller amounts of gold and silver bullion. Antamina: The company owns 33.75% of Antamina, a copper/zinc mine in Peru. Antamina also produces smaller amounts of molybdenum and lead/bismuth concentrate.
