BP p.l.c. operates as an integrated oil and gas company worldwide. The company provides customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, lubricants to keep engines moving and the petrochemicals products used to make everyday items as diverse as paints, clothes, and packaging. Segments UPSTREAM This segment is responsible for the company’s activities in oil and natural gas exploration, field development and production, and midstream transportation, storage and processing. The company also markets and trades natural gas, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), power and natural gas liquids (NGLs). In 2013, its activities took place in 27 countries. The company delivers its exploration, development, and production activities through five global technical and operating functions: Exploration The exploration function is responsible for renewing the company’s resource base through access, exploration and appraisal. Its major development areas include Alaska, Angola, Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, Egypt, the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, and the U.K. North Sea. The global wells organization and the global projects organization are responsible for the execution of wells (drilling and completions) and major projects. Production The global operations organization is responsible for operations, including upstream production assets and midstream transportation and processing activities. Its oil and natural gas production assets are located onshore and offshore and include wells, gathering centres, in-field flow lines, processing facilities, storage facilities, offshore platforms, export systems (transit lines), pipelines and LNG plant facilities. The principal areas of production are Angola, Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Trinidad, the UAE, the U.K., and the U.S. Upstream Activities Europe In Europe, the company is active in the U.K. North Sea and the Norwegian Sea. Its activities in the North Sea include a focus on improving recovery from existing producing fields and selected new field developments. North America The company’s upstream activities in North America take place in four main areas: deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Lower 48 states, Alaska and Canada. The U.S. onshore business operates in the Lower 48 states producing natural gas, NGLs and condensate across nine states, including production from tight gas, coalbed methane (CBM) and shale gas assets. In Alaska, the company operates 13 North Slope oilfields (including Prudhoe Bay, Endicott, Northstar and Milne Point) and 4 North Slope pipelines, and own interests in 6 other producing fields. Also in Alaska, the company owns a 48.4% interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). In Canada, the company is focused on oil sands development and intends to use in situ steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology, which uses the injection of steam into the reservoir to warm the bitumen so that it can flow to the surface through producing wells. It holds interests in three oil sands leases through the Sunrise Oil Sands and Terre de Grace partnerships and the Pike Oil Sands joint operation. In addition, the company has exploration interests in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. South America In South America, the company has upstream activities in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay and Trinidad & Tobago. In Brazil, the company has interests in 24 exploration and production concessions, 6 of which are operated by the company, across 6 basins. In Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, the company conducts activity through Pan American Energy LLC (PAE), an equity-accounted joint venture with Bridas Corporation, in which the company has a 60% interest. In Uruguay, the company has interests in three offshore deepwater exploration blocks: blocks 11 and 12 in the Pelotas basin and block 6 in the Punta del Este basin, together covering an area of approximately 26,000km2. In Trinidad & Tobago, the company holds licences covering 1,806,000 acres offshore of the east and north-east coast. Facilities include 13 offshore platforms and 1 onshore processing facility. Production includes oil, gas and associated liquids
