Peabody Energy Corporation is engaged in the mining of thermal coal for sale primarily to electric utilities and metallurgical coal for sale to industrial customers. The company’s mining operations are located in the United States (U.S.) and Australia, including an equity-affiliate mining operation in Australia. The company also markets and brokers coal from other coal producers, both as principal and agent, and trades coal and freight-related contracts through trading and business offices in China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, India, Indonesia, and the U.S. The company’s other energy-related commercial activities include participating in operations of a mine-mouth coal-fueled generating plant, managing its coal reserve and real estate holdings and supporting the development of Btu Conversion and clean coal technologies. The company owns interests in 28 active coal mining operations located in the U.S. and Australia. It has a majority interest in 27 of those coal operations and a 50% equity interest in the Middlemount Mine in Australia. In addition to its mining operations, the company markets and brokers coal from its operations and other coal producers, both as principal and agent, and trade coal and freight-related contracts through trading and business offices in China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, India, Indonesia, and the U.S. Segments The company conducts business through four principal segments: Western U.S. Mining, Midwestern U.S. Mining, Australian Mining, and Trading and Brokerage. Its fifth segment, Corporate and Other, includes mining and export/transportation joint ventures, activities associated with certain energy-related commercial matters, Btu Conversion, the optimization of its coal reserve and real estate holdings and costs associated with past mining obligations. Mining Segments U.S. Mining Operations The principal business of the company’s Western and Midwestern U.S. Mining segments is the mining, preparation and sale of thermal coal, which is supplied to the U.S. electricity generators and industrial customers for power generation, with a portion sold into seaborne export markets. The company’s Western U.S. Mining segment includes its Powder River Basin, Southwest and Colorado mining operations. The mines in that segment are characterized by surface mining extraction processes and coal with a low sulfur and Btu content. The company’s Midwestern U.S. Mining segment includes its active mining operations in Illinois and Indiana, which are characterized by a mix of surface and underground mining extraction processes and coal with a high sulfur and Btu content. Australian Mining Operations The company’s Australian Mining segment operations consist of its mines in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. The mines in that segment are characterized by both surface and underground extraction processes for the mining of various qualities of metallurgical and thermal coal. Metallurgical coal qualities produced by that segment include hard coking, semi-hard coking, semi-soft and low volatile pulverized coal injection (LV PCI) coals. LV PCI coal is used by steel producers as a partial replacement for coke made from coking coal. The company’s Australian Mining segment operations are primarily export focused with customers spread across various countries, with a portion of its coal being sold within Australia. Trading and Brokerage The company’s Trading and Brokerage segment is engaged in the direct and brokered trading of coal and freight-related contracts through trading and business offices in Australia, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Coal brokering is conducted both as principal and agent in support of various coal production-related activities that might involve coal produced from the company’s mines, coal sourcing arrangements with third-party mining companies or offtake agreements with other coal producers. From time to time and where possible, the company’s Trading and Brokerage segment might enter into financial derivative contract positions offsetting certain coal purchase
