The company offers its customers automatic backup. It enables customers to access stored files from Carbonite servers anytime, anywhere using a Web browser or from any Internet-connected device using one of its free iPad, iPhone, or Android apps. Customers can browse their photos, play music and videos, and view documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Unlike traditional remote desktop applications, the company allows its customers to access their stored files even if their computers are turned off, lost, stolen, or destroyed. The company encrypts all customer files before they are transmitted to its data centers, guarding against unauthorized access to stored files. The company offers backup solutions to its customers with anytime, anywhere access to their stored files. It offers small business customers cloud backup for various computers for an annual flat fee based on the total amount of data backed up, with the option to purchase additional incremental storage capacity. For small business customers with servers, it offers cloud backup for an unlimited number of servers for a flat annual fee based on the total amount of data backed up, with the option to purchase additional incremental storage capacity. The company’s server solutions also offers management capabilities, including scheduling, retention, bandwidth and compression settings, and detailed monitoring and reporting via a personalized server dashboard. The company encrypts files using a key before the files leave the customer’s computer and transmits the encrypted files over the Internet to one of its secure data centers. Customers’ files remain encrypted on the company’s servers to guard against unauthorized access. Proprietary Server Software At the core of its offerings is its proprietary server software designed specifically for cloud backup. The server software is comprised of two major components: the Carbonite Communications System (CCS) and the Carbonite File System (CFS). CCS moves customer data between the company’s software installed on its customers’ computers and CFS running on its storage servers.
