Cascades Inc. is engaged in the production, conversion, and marketing of packaging products and tissue papers principally consisted of recycled fiber. Sectors The company operates through two operating sectors, Packaging Products and Tissue Papers. These two sectors include approximately 100 operating units located in Canada, the United States, and Europe. PACKAGING PRODUCTS This sector is divided into three groups of activities: European Boxboard Group, Containerboard Group, and Specialty Products Group. European Boxboard Group The European Boxboard Group manufactures premium coated boxboard and folding cartons in Europe. In Europe, the company operates two mills, one in France and one in Sweden that produce coated boxboard made of virgin fiber. These two plants have a total annual production capacity of 210,000 metric tonnes. As of December 31, 2013, the company also held a 57.61% investment in Reno de Medici S.p.A. (RdM), an European producer of recycled coated boxboard. RdM operates six mills and two sheeting centers. Its annual production capacity is 900,000 metric tones. Containerboard Group The Containerboard Group manufactures containerboard and boxboard, and converts corrugated and folding carton products in North America. The Containerboard Group conducts business under the name, Norampac. The Containerboard Group has 31 mills and converting plants located in Canada and the United States. This network produces a range of products for sale to both regional and national customers in various industries, including the food, beverage, and consumer products industries. The Containerboard Group operates five linerboard and corrugated medium mills, as well as two premium coated boxboard mills having a combined annual production capacity of 1,225,000 short tons. Except for one corrugated medium mill in the United States, all of the Group’s mills are located in Canada. The products manufactured by the seven manufacturing mills consist of 24% linerboard, 58% corrugated medium, and 18% boxboard. In 2013, approximately 50% of their output was converted by Norampac’s 21 corrugated products converting plants and 3 folding cartons plants, all located across Canada and the Northeastern United States. The Containerboard Group purchases all of its needs in virgin fiber in Québec and Ontario, and purchases 72% of its recycled fiber in Canada and the rest in the United States. In 2013, the Containerboard Group announced an agreement with Maritime Paper Products Limited (MPPL) to create a joint arrangement for their corrugated board activities located in the Atlantic Provinces. The Containerboard Group holds 40% of the joint venture and supplies it with containerboard, while MPPL oversees the management of the converting operations, as the majority owner. In 2013, the Containerboard Group increased its production capacity through its 59.7% participation in Greenpac Mill LLC. The new mill manufactures light weight linerboard made with 100% recycled fiber and produced its first roll in 2013. The Greenpac mill would have an annual production capacity of 540,000 short tons. Its own sales force carries out the sales of this Group together with sales agents for export purposes. Specialty Products Group The Specialty Products Group operates in four main sectors of activity, including Industrial Packaging, Consumer Packaging, Specialty Papers, and Recovery and Recycling. This Group operates 46 facilities located in North America and Europe, including 23 recovery centers in Canada and the United States. Industrial Packaging The Industrial Packaging sector is active in four markets, such as protective packaging, specialty containers, structural components, and paperboard and fiber composites. Products include Technicomb and Flexicomb honeycomb paperboard, Multiboard laminated paperboard, and uncoated recycled paperboard (URB). Cascades Conversion Inc., Converdis Inc., and Cascades Sonoco Inc., joint venture companies, convert uncoated paperboard, obtained in part within the company’s network, into industrial packaging materials.
