CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. engages in the production, marketing, distribution, and sale of cement, ready-mix concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials worldwide. The company’s annual installed cement production capacity as of December 31, 2012, was approximately 94.8 million tons. It also trades cement and clinker, having traded approximately 8.8 million tons of cement and clinker in 2012. The company provides construction-related services to customers and communities in approximately 50 countries worldwide. The company operates with operations in Mexico, the United States, northern Europe, the Mediterranean, South America, and the Caribbean and Asia. As of December 31, 2012, its main cement production facilities were located in Mexico, the United States, Spain, Egypt, Germany, Colombia, the Philippines, Poland, the Dominican Republic, the United Kingdom, Croatia, Panama, Latvia, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. As of December 31, 2012, the total surface of property in its quarries operations (including cement raw materials quarries and aggregates quarries), was approximately 109,704 hectares, of which approximately 73% was owned by the company and approximately 27% was managed through lease contracts. As of December 31, 2012, the company operated 151 cement raw materials quarries across its global operations, serving its facilities dedicated to cement production, which are located at or near the cement plant facilities. As of December 31, 2012, the company operated 476 aggregates quarries across its global operations dedicated to serving its ready-mix and aggregates businesses. Products The company modifies its products and services to suit customers’ specific needs, from home construction, improvement and renovation to agricultural, industrial and marine/hydraulic applications. Cement: The company manufactures cement through a closely controlled chemical process, which begins with the mining and crushing of limestone and clay, and, in some instances, other raw materials. The mix is typically dried, then fed into a grinder which grinds the various materials in preparation for the kiln. For cement limestone, clay and gypsum, the company runs chemical tests to prepare the mining plan of the quarry, to confirm material quality and reduce variations in the mineral content. As of December 31, 2012, 55 of its 57 operative production plants used the dry process and two used the wet process. The company’s operative production plants that use the wet process are located in Nicaragua and the United Kingdom. In the wet process, the raw materials are mixed with water to form slurry, which is fed into a kiln. The company primarily covers its gypsum needs from third parties; however, the company also operates gypsum quarries in the United States, Spain, the Dominican Republic and Egypt. Ready-Mix Concrete: The company modifies its ready-mix concrete to fit its clients’ specific needs. The company also uses additives to customize its concrete consistent with the transportation time from its plant to the project, weather conditions at the construction site, and the project’s specifications. Aggregates: The company is a major supplier of aggregates: primarily the crushed stone, sand and gravel, used in virtually all forms of construction. Customers use its aggregates for an array of uses, from a key component in the construction and maintenance of highways, walkways, and railways to an indispensable ingredient in concrete, asphalt, and mortar. Trading Operations In 2012, the company traded approximately 8.8 million tons of cementitious materials, including 8.0 million tons of cement and clinker. Approximately 82% of the cement and clinker trading volume in 2012 consisted of exports from its operations in Costa Rica, Croatia, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Germany, Guatemala, Latvia, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain and the United States. The remaining approximately 18% was purchased from third parties in countries, such as Belgium, China, Colombia, Croatia, Egypt, Honduras, Jamaica, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States
