Dycom Industries, Inc. provides specialty contracting services in the United States and Canada. Specialty Contracting Services The company offers engineering, construction, maintenance, and installation services to telecommunications providers; underground facility locating services to various utilities, including telecommunications providers; and other construction and maintenance services to electric and gas utilities and others. Engineering: The company provides outside plant engineers and drafters to telecommunication providers. These personnel design aerial, underground and buried fiber optic, copper, and coaxial cable systems that extend from the telephone company central office, or cable operator headend, to the consumer's home or business. The engineering services the company provides to telephone companies include the design of service area concept boxes, terminals, buried and aerial drops, transmission and central office equipment; the proper administration of feeder and distribution cable pairs; and fiber cable routing and design. For cable television multiple system operators, the company performs make-ready studies, strand mapping, field walk-out, computer-aided radio frequency design and drafting, and fiber cable routing and design. The company obtains rights of way and permits in support of its engineering activities and those of its customers, and provide construction management and inspection personnel in conjunction with engineering services or on a stand-alone basis. Construction, Maintenance, and Installation: The company places and splices fiber, copper, and coaxial cables. In addition, it excavates trenches in which to place these cables; place related structures, such as poles, anchors, conduits, manholes, cabinets, and closures; place drop lines from main distribution lines to the consumer's home or business; and maintain and remove these facilities. These services are provided to both telephone companies and cable television multiple system operators in connection with the deployment of new networks and the expansion or maintenance of existing networks. For cable television system operators, the company installs and maintains customer premise equipment such as digital video recorders, set top boxes and modems. The company provides tower construction, lines and antenna installation, and foundation and equipment pad construction for wireless carriers, as well as equipment and material fabrication and site testing services. Additionally, premise wiring services are provided to various companies, as well as state and local governments. These services include the installation, repair, and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure within improved structures. Underground Facility Locating Services: The company provides underground facility locating services to various utility companies, including telecommunication providers. Under various state laws excavators are required, prior to excavating, to request from utility companies the location of their underground facilities to prevent utility network outages and to safeguard the general public from the consequences of damages to underground utilities. The company’s underground facility locating services include locating telephone, cable television, power, water, sewer, and gas lines. Electric and Gas Utilities and Other Construction and Maintenance Services: The company performs construction and maintenance services for electric and gas utilities and other customers. These services are performed primarily on a stand-alone basis and typically include installing and maintaining overhead and underground power distribution lines. In addition, the company periodically provides these services for the combined projects of telecommunication providers and electric utility companies, primarily in joint trenching situations, in which services are being delivered to new housing subdivisions. The company also maintains and installs underground natural gas transmission and distribution systems for gas utilities. Strategy The company’s business strategy is to capitalize on long-term growth drivers; selectively increase market share; pursue disciplined financial and operating strategies; and pursue selective acquisitions. Acquisitions In 2012, the company acquired the telecommunications infrastructure services subsidiaries of Quanta Services, Inc. During 2013, the company acquired Sage Telecommunications Corp of Colorado, LLC and certain assets of a tower construction and maintenance company. Seasonality The company's operations are impacted by extended periods of inclement weather, which falls during its second and third fiscal quarters (year ended July 27, 2013). Also, a disproportionate percentage of total paid holidays fall within its second quarter, which decreases the number of available workdays. Additionally, its customer premise equipment installation activities for cable providers historically decrease around calendar year end holidays as their customers generally require less activity during this period. Customers The company has relationships with various telephone companies, cable television multiple system operators, and electric and gas utilities and others. These companies include AT&T Inc.; CenturyLink, Inc.; Comcast Corporation; Verizon Communications Inc.; Windstream Corporation; Charter Communications, Inc.; Time Warner Cable Inc.; Frontier Communications Corporation; Ericsson Inc.; Crown Castle International Corp.; Bright House Networks; Cablevision Systems Corporation; Edison International; Questar Gas Company; and Washington Gas Light Company, as well as various rural service providers. History Dycom Industries, Inc. was founded in 1969. The company incorporated in the state of Florida in 1969.
