Eagle Materials Inc. is engaged in the manufacture and distribution of gypsum wallboard and the manufacture and sale of cement. The company sells cement in six regional markets, including northern Nevada and California, the greater Chicago area, the Rocky Mountain region, the Central Plains region, and Texas. Its gypsum wallboard business is supported by its recycled paperboard business, while its cement business is supported by its concrete and aggregates business. The company’s products are commodities that are essential in the construction and renovation of houses, roads, bridges, commercial, and industrial buildings; and other newer generation structures, such as wind farms. As of March 31, 2014, the company operated 6 cement plants (1 of which belongs to its joint venture company), 5 gypsum wallboard plants, 1 recycled paperboard plant, 17 concrete batching plants, 4 aggregates facilities, and 1 frac sand processing and drying plant. Segments The company’s businesses are separated into two businesses, Cement and Concrete and Aggregates, and Gypsum Wallboard and Recycled Paperboard. Cement and Concrete and Aggregates Operations Cement The company’s cement production facilities are located in or near Buda, Texas; LaSalle, Illinois; Laramie, Wyoming; Sugar Creek, Missouri; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Fernley, Nevada. All of its cement subsidiaries are wholly-owned except the Buda, Texas plant, which is owned by Texas Lehigh Cement Company LP, a limited partnership joint venture owned 50% by the company and 50% by Lehigh Cement Company LLC, a subsidiary of Heidelberg Cement AG. Its LaSalle, Illinois plant operates under the name, Illinois Cement Company; the Laramie, Wyoming plant operates under the name, Mountain Cement Company; the Fernley, Nevada plant operates under the name of Nevada Cement Company; and its Sugar Creek, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma plants operate under the name, Central Plains Cement Company. The company’s net cement production, including its 50% share of the cement joint venture production, totaled 4.0 million short tons in the year ended March 31, 2014. The joint venture also owns a minority interest in an import terminal in Houston, Texas and could purchase approximately 495,000 short tons annually from this cement terminal. Concrete and Aggregates The production of readymix concrete involves the mixing of cement, sand, gravel, or crushed stone and water to form concrete, which is then sold and distributed to various construction contractors. Concrete is produced in batch plants and transported to the customer’s job site in mixer trucks. The construction aggregates business consists of the mining, extraction, production, and sale of crushed stone, sand, gravel, and aggregates, such as expanded clays and shales. Construction aggregates of suitable characteristics are employed in various types of construction, including the production of readymix concrete and asphaltic mixes used in highway construction and maintenance. The company began selling third-party purchased frac sand in the Texas market during the year ended March 31, 2014. The company produces and distributes readymix concrete from company-owned sites north of Sacramento, California; Austin, Texas; and the greater Kansas City area. It conducts aggregate operations near its concrete facilities in northern California; Austin, Texas; and the greater Kansas City area. All of its frac sand sales are in south Texas, with sand purchased from third parties. Aggregates are obtained principally by mining and extracting from quarries owned or leased by the company. Sales and Distribution Cement: Cement is distributed directly to the company’s customers primarily through customer pickups, as well as by common carriers from its plants or distribution terminals. Concrete and Aggregates: The company sells readymix concrete to various contractors and other customers in each plant’s selling area. Its batch plants in Austin, the greater Kansas City area, and northern California are located to serve each selling area.
