Gevo, Inc. operates as a renewable chemicals and biofuels company. The company focuses on the development and commercialization of alternatives to petroleum-based products based on isobutanol produced from renewable feedstocks. The company has developed the Gevo Integrated Fermentation Technology (GIFT), an integrated technology platform for the production and separation of isobutanol. GIFT consists of two components, proprietary biocatalysts, which convert sugars derived from multiple renewable feedstocks into isobutanol through fermentation, and a proprietary separation unit, which is designed to separate isobutanol from water during the fermentation process. It developed its technology platform to be compatible with the existing approximately 23 billion gallons per year of global operating ethanol production capacity. Segments The company has two operating segments, the Gevo, Inc. segment and the Gevo Development/Agri-Energy segment. Gevo, Inc.: This segment is responsible for various research and development activities related to the future production of isobutanol, including the development of the company’s proprietary biocatalysts, retrofit process, and the next generation of chemicals and biofuels that would be based on its isobutanol technology. This segment also develops, maintains, and protects the company’s intellectual property portfolio, develops future markets for its isobutanol, and provides corporate oversight services. Gevo Development/Agri-Energy: This segment is responsible for the operation of the company’s Agri-Energy Facility and the production of ethanol, isobutanol, and related products. Customer Agreements The company has an international off-take and distribution agreement with Sasol Chemical Industries, acting through its Sasol Solvents division to distribute isobutanol worldwide. The company has a commercial off-take agreement with Mansfield Oil Company to distribute isobutanol-based fuel into the petroleum market. The company has a commercial off-take and marketing agreement with Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC for the sale of isobutanol distiller’s grains (iDGs) produced by the Agri-Energy Facility. Partnerships and Collaborations The company has an alliance with ICM, Inc. to retrofit ethanol plants to the production of isobutanol. ICM, Inc. is a company that focuses on engineering, building, and supporting biorefineries for the renewable fuel industry. The company has obtained rights to develop and integrate Cargill, Incorporated’s (Cargill’s) microorganisms into GIFT. The company has a license agreement with Cargill. Under the license agreement, Cargill granted the company a worldwide, royalty-bearing license to certain Cargill patents and biological materials, including specialized microorganisms and tools for modifying those microorganisms to produce specific molecules. The company has a joint research, development, license, and commercialization agreement with The Coca-Cola Company to create bio-PX from its isobutanol. The company has an isobutanol joint venture agreement with Redfield Energy, LLC (Redfield), under which it has agreed to work with Redfield to retrofit Redfield’s approximately 50 million gallon per year ethanol production facility located near Redfield, South Dakota for the commercial production of isobutanol. Strategy The company’s strategy is to commercialize biobased alternatives to petroleum-based products using a combination of synthetic biology and chemical technology. Its strategy is to commercialize its isobutanol for use directly as a specialty chemical and fuel blendstock and for conversion into plastics, fibers, rubber, other polymers, and hydrocarbon fuels. Major elements of its strategy are to deploy first commercial production facility; build on existing off-take agreements with customers to support capacity growth; expand its production capacity through retrofit of additional existing ethanol facilities; expand adoption of its isobutanol across multiple applications and markets; align the value chain for its isobutanol by collaborating with large brand owners and customers; and incorporate additional feedstocks into its isobutanol production facilities. Intellectual Property As of December 31, 2012, the company licensed rights to 93 issued patents and filed patent applications in the U.S. and in various foreign jurisdictions. It had submitted 375 patent applications in the U.S. and in various foreign jurisdictions. As of January 31, 2013, the company had been issued 13 U.S. Patents and 2 international patents. The company has obtained registered trademarks for Gevo Integrated Fermentation Technology, GIFT, and Gevo in the U.S.. It has a pending U.S. trademark application for iDGs. These registered and pending U.S. trademarks are also registered or pending in certain foreign countries. Competition The company’s competitors include Cathay Industrial Biotech Ltd.; METabolic EXplorer S.A.; Eastman Chemicals Company; Cobalt Technologies, Inc.; and Green Biologics Ltd. History Gevo, Inc. was founded in 2005. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 2005.
