Its joint ventures manufacture and market products in approximately 130 countries and republics worldwide. Segments The company manages its business under three operating segments: U.S. Retail; International; and Convenience Stores and Foodservice. U.S. Retail This segment reflects business with various grocery stores, mass merchandisers, membership stores, natural food chains, and drug, dollar and discount chains operating throughout the United States. Its product categories in this business segment include ready-to-eat cereals, refrigerated yogurt, soup, meal kits, shelf stable and frozen vegetables, refrigerated and frozen dough products, dessert and baking mixes, frozen pizza and pizza snacks, grain, fruit and savory snacks, and a wide variety of organic products, including granola bars, cereal, and soup. International This segment consists of retail and foodservice businesses outside of the United States. The company’s product categories include ready-to-eat cereals, shelf stable and frozen vegetables, meal kits, refrigerated and frozen dough products, dessert and baking mixes, frozen pizza snacks, refrigerated yogurt, grain and fruit snacks, and super-premium ice cream and frozen desserts. The company also sells super-premium ice cream and frozen desserts directly to consumers through owned retail shops. Its International segment also includes products manufactured in the United States for export, mainly to Caribbean and Latin American markets, as well as products it manufactures for sale to its international joint ventures. Convenience Stores and Foodservice This segment offers ready-to-eat cereals, snacks, refrigerated yogurt, unbaked and fully baked frozen dough products, baking mixes, and flour. Many products it sells are branded to the consumer and nearly all are branded to its customers. The company sells to distributors and operators in many customer channels, including foodservice, convenience stores, vending, and supermarket bakeries. Substantially all of this segment’s operations are located in the United States. Customers The company’s customers include commercial and noncommercial foodservice distributors and operators, restaurants. It generally sells to these customers through its direct sales force. The company use broker and distribution arrangements for certain products or to serve certain types of customers. During fiscal 2014, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and its affiliates (Wal-Mart) accounted for 21 percent of the company’s consolidated net sales. Research and Development The company’s research and development expenditures were $244 million in fiscal 2014. Trademarks and Patents The company’s products are marketed under various trademarks. Some of the trademarks used in the company’s global operations include Betty Crocker, Bisquick, Bugles, Cascadian Farm, Cheerios, Chex, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Fiber One, Food Should Taste Good, Fruit by the Foot, Fruit Gushers, Fruit Roll-Ups, Gardetto’s, Go-Gurt, Gold Medal, Golden Grahams, Green Giant, Häagen-Dazs, Helpers, Jeno’s, Jus-Rol, Kitano, Kix, La Salteña, Larabar, Latina, Liberte, Lucky Charms, Muir Glen, Nature Valley, Oatmeal Crisp, Old El Paso, Pillsbury, Progresso, Raisin Nut Bran, Total, Totinos, Trix, Wanchai Ferry, Wheaties, Yoki, and Yoplait.
