Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. operates as an entertainment company worldwide. The company operates in motion picture production and distribution, television programming and syndication, home entertainment, family entertainment, digital distribution, new channel platforms, and international distribution and sales businesses. Segments The company operates primarily through two segments, Motion Pictures and Television Production. Motion Pictures segment This segment consists of the development and production of feature films; the acquisition of North American and worldwide distribution rights; North American theatrical, home entertainment, and television distribution of feature films produced and acquired; and worldwide licensing of distribution rights to feature films produced and acquired. Theatrical The company is engaged in the theatrical release of motion pictures in the United States (the ‘U.S.’) and Canada, which are licensed to theatrical exhibitors on a picture-by-picture basis. Production: Theatrical production consists of ‘greenlighting’ and financing motion pictures, as well as the development of screenplays, filming activities, and post-filming editing/post-production process. The company takes a disciplined approach to film production with the goal of producing content that it could distribute to theatrical and ancillary markets, which include home entertainment, pay and free television, on-demand services, and digital media platforms, both domestically and internationally. The company’s production division reviews various scripts and original intellectual property, looking for material that would attract talent (primarily actors and directors). It develops a small number of such scripts, working with agencies and producers to recruit talent that appeals to the film's target audience. Its young-adult films include Divergent, the Twilight series and The Hunger Games films, its horror films and its urban films. Its theatrical production division presents projects to a committee consisted of the heads of its production, theatrical distribution, home entertainment, international distribution, legal and finance departments. Distribution: The company distributes motion pictures directly to the U.S. movie theaters. In the year ended March 31, 2014, it released 13 motion pictures theatrically, which included both Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, LLC (Summit Entertainment) films developed and produced in-house, films co-developed and co-produced and films acquired from third parties. Home Entertainment The company is engaged in the release of its own film and television productions and acquired or licensed films, including theatrical and direct-to-video releases, and sells to retail stores and through digital media platforms. It distributes a library of approximately 15,000 motion picture titles and television episodes and programs. Home entertainment revenue consists of packaged media revenue and digital media revenue. Home entertainment distribution involves the marketing, promotion, and sale and/or lease of DVDs and Blu-ray discs to wholesalers and retailers who then sell or rent the DVDs and Blu-ray discs to consumers for private viewing, and through a range of digital media platforms. The company’s U.S. home entertainment distribution operation aims to exploit its film and television content library of approximately 15,000 motion picture titles and television episodes and programs, consisting of titles from the company and its subsidiaries, affiliates, and joint ventures, such as Summit Entertainment; Artisan Entertainment; Grindstone Entertainment Group; Modern Entertainment; Trimark; Mandate Pictures, LLC; Pantelion Films; and Roadside Attractions, as well as titles from third parties, such as A&E, Disney-ABC Domestic Television, HIT Entertainment, LeapFrog Entertainment, Marvel, MGA Entertainment, Miramax, Saban Entertainment, StudioCanal, Tyler Perry Studios, Wrekin Hill Entertainment, and Zoetrope Corporation. Packaged Media: The company distributes or sells its titles directly to retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, Costco, and others who buy large volumes
