LG Display Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels in the Republic of Korea, the United States, Europe, China, and rest of Asia. Products The company designs and manufacture its panels to meet the various size and performance specifications of its customers, including specifications relating to thinness, weight, resolution, color quality, power consumption, response times and viewing angles. The specifications vary from product to product. Televisions The company’s television display panels range from 17 inches to 105 inches in size. The company’s product portfolio includes panels of various sizes such as 17-inch, 19-inch, 20-inch, 22-inch, 26-inch, 32-inch, 37-inch, 42-inch, 47-inch, 49-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch, 60-inch, 65-inch, 72-inch, 84-inch and 105-inch display panels. Notebook Computers The company’s display panels for notebook computers range from 10.1 inches to 17.3 inches in size in various display formats. In 2013, its principal products in this category were 13.3-inch, 14.0-inch and 15.6-inch display panels. Desktop Monitors The company’s desktop monitor display panels range from 15 inches to 34 inches in size in various display resolutions and formats. In 2013, its principal products in terms of sales revenue in this category were 21.5-inch, 23-inch and 27-inch display panels. Tablet Computers The company’s tablet computer display panels range from 7 inches to 12.9 inches in size in various display formats. In 2013, its principal products in this category included display panels smaller than 10 inches. Mobile and Other Applications The company’s product portfolio also includes panels for mobile and other applications, which utilize an array of display panel sizes, including smartphones and other types of mobile phones and industrial and other applications, including entertainment systems, automotive displays, portable navigation devices and medical diagnostic equipment. Some of the panels the company produces for industrial products, such as medical diagnostic equipment, are highly specialized products manufactured to the specifications of its clients, while others, such as industrial controllers, manufactured by slightly modifying a standard product design for its other products, such as desktop monitors. Sales and Marketing The company has wholly-owned sales subsidiaries in the United States, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, China and Singapore. Its sales are conducted through multi-channel sales and distribution network, including direct sales to end-brand customers and their system integrators, overseas subsidiaries, and an affiliated trading company, LG International, and its subsidiaries. Suppliers The company’s supplier includes Paju Electric Glass Co., Ltd., a joint venture company of which the company and Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. own 40% and 60%, respectively. Customers The company’s display panels are included primarily in televisions, notebook computers, desktop monitors, tablet computers and mobile and other applications sold by its global end-brand customers, including LG Electronics. The company sells its TFT-LCD panels to various other manufacturers of computers and electronic products. Joint Venture In 2012, the company entered into a joint venture agreement with Guangzhou GET Technologies Development Co., Ltd. (GET Tech), and Shenzhen SKYWORTH-RGB Electronic Co., Ltd. (Skyworth), establishing LG Display (China) Co., Ltd., which would own and operate the eighth-generation fabrication facility that is under construction in Guangzhou, China. Competition The company’s principal competitors are: Samsung Display and Hydis Technologies in Korea; AU Optronics, Innolux, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and HannStar Display in Taiwan; Japan Display, Sharp and Panasonic LCD in Japan; and BOE and China Star Optoelectronics in China. History LG Display Co., Ltd. was founded in 1985. The company was incorporated in 1985 under the laws of the Republic of Korea. It was formerly known as LG Soft, Ltd. and changed its name to LG LCD Co., Ltd. in 1998 and then to LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. in 1999. Further, the company changed its name to LG Display Co., Ltd. in 2008.
