National Grid plc is engaged in the transmission and distribution of electricity and gas in the Great Britain and northeastern U.S. Operations U.K. Electricity Transmission The company owns the electricity transmission system in England and Wales. Its networks comprise approximately 7,200 kilometers (4,470 miles) of overhead line, 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) of underground cable and 335 substations. The company is also the national electricity transmission system operator, responsible for both the England and Wales transmission system, and the two high voltage transmission networks in Scotland, which the company does not own. It is also designated as system operator for the new offshore electricity transmission regime. U.K. Gas Transmission The company owns and operates the gas national transmission system in the Great Britain, with day-to-day responsibility for balancing demand. Its network comprises approximately 7,660 kilometers (4,760 miles) of high pressure pipe and 23 compressor stations. U.K. Gas Distribution The company owns and operates four of the eight regional gas distribution networks in the Great Britain. Its networks comprise approximately 131,000 kilometers (81,000 miles) of gas distribution pipeline. The company transports gas from the gas national transmission system to approximately 10.9 million consumers on behalf of 32 gas shippers. U.S. Regulated Business The company owns and operates electricity distribution networks in upstate New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Through these networks, the company serves approximately 3.4 million electricity consumers in New England and upstate New York. Its U.S. gas distribution networks provide services to approximately 3.6 million consumers across the northeastern U.S., located in service territories in upstate New York, New York City, Long Island, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The company owns and operates an electricity transmission system of approximately 14,328 kilometers (8,903 miles) spanning upstate New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont, operating 169 kilometers (105 miles) of underground cable and 521 substations, with a further 12 planned. The company also owns and operates 50 fossil fuel-powered units on Long Island that together provide approximately 3,800 megawatt (MW) of power under contract to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). Under a separate contract with LIPA, four dual fuel combustion turbine units provide an additional 160 MW of capacity. The company is responsible for billing, customer service, and supply services. It forecasts, plans for, and procures approximately 15 billion standard cubic meters of gas and 32 terawatt hours of electricity annually across three states. Other Activities National Grid Grain LNG Limited (Grain LNG): Grain LNG is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) importation facility in the U.K. It operates under long-term contracts with customers and provides importation services, storage and send out capacity on to the national transmission system. Interconnectors: BritNed Development Limited (BritNed) is a joint venture between the company and TenneT, the Dutch transmission system operator. It builds, and owns and operates a 1,000 MW subsea electricity link between the U.K. and the Netherlands, which is approximately 260 kilometers (162 miles) in length. BritNed is a merchant interconnector that sells its capacity through a range of explicit and implicit auction products. Metering: National Grid Metering provides installation and maintenance services to energy suppliers in the regulated market in the Great Britain. It maintains an asset base of approximately 15 million domestic, industrial, and commercial meters. U.K. Property: National Grid Property Holdings Limited is responsible in the U.K. for the management, clean-up, and disposal of surplus sites, majority of which are former gas works. Xoserve: Xoserve delivers transactional services on behalf of all the major gas network transportation companies in the Great Britain, including the company. Xoserve is jointly owned by the company, as majority shareholder, and the other gas distribution network companies. U.S. Non-Regulated Businesses: Some of the company’s U.S. businesses are not subject to state or federal rate-making authority. These include interests in some of its LNG road transportation, some gas transmission pipelines, and certain commercial services relating to solar installations, fuel cells, and other new technologies. Significant Events In July 2014, National Grid plc announced a new gas pipeline in Newark Road, Lincoln. In November 2014, National Grid plc and The Berkeley Group Holdings plc launched a new joint venture, to be named St William Homes LLP. History National Grid plc was founded in 1990.
