Smart Devices This segment focuses on the company’s advanced products, including Lumia smartphones powered by the Windows Phone operating system. During 2012, this segment shipped approximately 35 million smartphones. The company commenced its partnership with Microsoft Corporation that brings together its respective complementary assets and expertise to build a new global mobile ecosystem for smartphones. In 2012, it introduced its first smartphones based on Windows Phone 8, which, for the first time, is based on majority of the same core technologies as its sister software Windows 8, which is used to power personal computers and tablets. First covers affordable products, such as the Nokia 101, a dual SIM music phone. During the beginning of 2013, the company had also introduced the Nokia 105 and FM radio. The target consumer for the company’s First products is someone seeking their first mobile experience, an ability to use their phone as a music player, a durable product, good battery life, and for whom price is a critical factor. Feature covers product, such as the Nokia 206. The target consumer for the company’s Feature products is someone seeking a product that offers good quality staple features, good battery life, and easy and affordable access to the Internet, primarily to Facebook and Twitter. Smart covers product, such as the Nokia Asha 311, a smartphone with a full touch, capacitive display, a fluid ‘swipe’ user interface, a power processor, 3.2 megapixel camera. The target consumer for the company’s Smart products is someone seeking an affordable smartphone whose hardware, software and services are optimized for—and not compromised by—low price points. Sales and Marketing: The company has a distribution and care network, primarily in China, India, and the Middle East and Africa. In 2012, sales in North America and Latin America were primarily to operator customers; sales in the Asia-Pacific, China, and the Middle East and Africa were primarily to distributors; and sales in Europe were distributed between operators and distributors. Strategy: In Mobile Phones, the company’s strategy focuses on utilizing its innovation and strength in growth markets to provide people with an affordable Internet experience on their mobile device. Patents and Licenses: The company engages in the development of the wireless technologies of global system for mobile communications/enhanced data rates for global evolution, third generation mobile communications/wideband code division multiple access, high-speed packet access, long-term evolution, and time division synchronous code division multiple access, and it has a patent portfolio in all of those technology areas, as well as for CDMA2000, worldwide interoperability for microwave access, and WiFi.
