Retail: The company sells satellite and Internet radios directly to consumers through its Website. Satellite and Internet radios are also marketed and distributed through major national and regional retailers. Satellite Radio Systems The company’s satellite radio systems are designed to provide clear reception in various areas despite variations in terrain, buildings, and other obstructions. It monitors its infrastructure and regularly evaluate improvements in technology. Its satellite radio systems have three principal components, such as satellites, terrestrial repeaters, and other satellite facilities; studios; and radios. Satellites, Terrestrial Repeaters and Other Satellite Facilities Satellites: The company owns a fleet of 10 orbiting satellites, 5 in the Sirius system, FM-1, FM-2, FM-3, FM-5 and FM-6; and 5 in the XM system, XM-1, XM-2, XM-3, XM-4 and XM-5. Four of these satellites are used as spares, two of which are expected to be de-orbited in 2014 as they reach the end of their useful lives. Satellite Insurance: The company holds in-orbit insurance for its FM-5, FM-6 and XM-5 satellites, which would expire in 2014, 2014 and 2015, respectively. Terrestrial Repeaters: In various areas with high concentrations of tall buildings, such as urban centers, signals from the company’s satellites might be blocked and reception of satellite signals could be adversely affected. In majority of these areas, it has deployed terrestrial repeaters to supplement satellite coverage. The company operates approximately 700 terrestrial repeaters as part of its systems across the United States. Other Satellite Facilities: The company controls and communicates with its satellites from facilities in North America and maintains earth stations in Panama and Ecuador to control and communicate with several of its Sirius satellites. Its satellites are monitored, tracked, and controlled by a third party satellite operator. Studios The company’s programming originates principally from studios in New York City and Washington D.C., and from smaller studio facilities in Cleveland, Los Angeles, Memphis, Nashville and Austin. Radios Radios are manufactured in three principal configurations - as in-dash radios, Dock & Play radios and home or commercial units. The company does not manufacture radios. It has manufacturers and distributors to produce and distribute radios, and has licensed its technology to various electronics manufacturers to develop, manufacture and distribute radios under certain brands. The company manages various aspects of the production of satellite and Internet radios. Connected Vehicle Services The company provides connected vehicle applications and services. Its connected vehicle services are designed to improve the safety, security and driving experience for vehicle owners while providing marketing and operational benefits to automakers and their dealers. It offers a portfolio of location-based services through two-way wireless connectivity, including safety, security, convenience, maintenance and data services, remote vehicles diagnostics, stolen or parked vehicle locator services, and monitoring of vehicle emission systems. In 2013, the company purchased the connected vehicle business of Agero, Inc. As a result of this acquisition, its connected vehicle business provides services to various automakers, including Acura, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lexus, Nissan North America, and Toyota. Subscribers to its connected vehicle services are not included in the company’s subscriber count. Canada The company owns approximately 38% of the equity of Sirius XM Canada Holdings Inc., the satellite radio provider in Canada.
