Sensata Technologies Holding N.V., through wholly-owned subsidiaries, operates as an industrial technology company. The company is engaged in the development, manufacture, and sale of sensors and controls worldwide. The company produces a range of customized sensors and controls for mission-critical applications, such as thermal circuit breakers in aircraft, pressure sensors in automotive systems, and bimetal current and temperature control devices in electric motors. The company’s subsidiaries include Sensata Technologies Intermediate Holding B.V. and Sensata Technologies B.V. The company’s primary products include pressure sensors, temperature sensors, speed sensors, position sensors, force sensors, motor protectors, and thermal and magnetic-hydraulic circuit breakers and switches. It develops customized solutions for specific customer requirements or applications across the appliance; automotive; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); industrial; aerospace; defense; data/telecom; and other end-markets. The company has relationships with various major global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other multinational companies. Sensors Business The company is a major supplier of automotive, commercial, and industrial sensors, including pressure sensors, speed and position sensors, temperature sensors, pressure switches, and force sensors. Its sensors are used in various applications, including automotive air conditioning, braking, transmission, and air bag applications, as well as HVAC and heavy vehicle off-road (HVOR) applications. The company’s products are used by the majority of global automotive OEMs. It uses a range of manufactured components, subassemblies, and raw materials in the manufacture of its products, including silver, gold, platinum, palladium, copper, aluminum, and nickel. The company’s sensors are customized devices that translate a physical phenomenon, such as force or position, into electronic signals that microprocessors or computer-based control systems could act upon. In January 2014, the company acquired Wabash Technologies to complement its existing magnetic speed and position sensors product portfolio, and to provide new capabilities in throttle position and transmission range sensing, while enabling additional entry points into the HVOR end-market. The company’s Magnetic Speed and Position business, as well as the acquired Wabash Technologies, also uses magnets containing rare earth metals, of which a majority of the world's production is in China. Controls Business The company provides bimetal electromechanical controls, thermal and magnetic-hydraulic circuit breakers, power inverters, and interconnection products. It manufactures and markets a portfolio of application-specific products, including motor and compressor protectors, circuit breakers, semiconductor burn-in test sockets, electrical HVAC controls, power inverters, and precision switches and thermostats. The company’s controls are sold into industrial, aerospace, military, commercial, and residential end-markets. Its controls are customized devices embedded within systems to protect them from excessive heat or current. Sales and Marketing The sales and marketing function within the company’s business is organized into various regions, such as the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Customers The company’s customer base in the sensors business includes a range of OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers in the automotive, industrial, and commercial end-markets. Its customers in the controls business include a range of industrial and commercial manufacturers and suppliers across multiple end-markets, primarily OEMs in the climate control, appliance, semiconductor, datacomm, telecommunications, and aerospace industries, as well as Tier 1 motor and compressor suppliers.
