The company is also engaged in the development, manufacture, and sale of silicon wafers to the semiconductor industry. Segments The company operates through two segments, Solar energy and Semiconductor Materials. SOLAR ENERGY This segment provides solar energy services that integrate the design, installation, financing, monitoring, operations, and maintenance portions of the downstream solar market for the company’s customers. This segment also manufactures polysilicon, silicon wafers, and solar modules to support its downstream solar business, as well as for sale to external customers as market conditions dictate. As of December 31, 2013, the company had interconnected approximately 816 solar power systems representing 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy generating capacity. It also had 540.1 megawatts (MW) of projects under construction and 3.4 GW in pipeline. This segment would sell solar modules to third parties in the event the opportunity aligns with the company’s internal needs. Its business is focused on the installation of solar energy systems that are connected to the electricity grid. The company sells its European, Asian, and Canadian projects to investors after they are constructed. It is developing and constructing solar power generation assets. These assets produce electricity that is sold to the energy consumer or utility generator and results in the recognition of electricity generation. Through electricity generation by solar electric systems that the company operates and through the solar power services agreements in certain states in the U.S., including Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, California, Ohio and Colorado, it is credited with approximately one renewable energy credit REC for each 1,000 kilowatt-hour (or megawatt-hour) of electricity that the company produces. The company announced the formation of a joint venture with Samsung Fine Chemicals Co. Ltd. to produce high purity granular polysilicon to meet some of its internal polysilicon needs. Its solar wafers are used as the starting material for crystalline solar cells. Marketing and Customers The company markets its solar energy generation, monitoring and maintenance services primarily through a direct sales force, and also through local or regional solar channel partners both domestically and internationally. Its U.S. solar energy customers fall into three categories, such as commercial customers, which principally include large, national retail chains and real estate property management firms; federal, state and municipal governments; and utilities. Its international business operations have focused in certain areas in Europe and Canada. Competition The company’s major competitors include SunPower Corporation; First Solar, Inc.; Enerparc; Sharp Corporation (Recurrent Energy); Phoenix Solar; BELECTRIC; JUWI Solar Gmbh; and Solar City. SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIALS This segment includes the development, production, and marketing of semiconductor silicon wafers ranging from 100 millimeter (4 inch) to 300 millimeter (12 inch) as the base material for the production of semiconductor devices. The company offers wafers with various features satisfying various product specifications to meet its customers’ exacting requirements. The company’s monocrystalline wafers for use in semiconductor applications range in size from 100 millimeter to 300 millimeter and are round in shape for semiconductor customers because of the nature of their processing equipment. Its wafers are used as the starting material for the manufacture of various types of semiconductor devices, including microprocessor, memory, logic, and power devices. In turn, these semiconductor devices are used in computers, cellular phones and other mobile electronic devices, automobiles, and other consumer and industrial products.
