Toyota Motor Corporation operates primarily in the automotive industry. The company also conducts business in finance and other industries. Segments The company operates through three segments: Automotive Operations, Financial Services Operations, and All Other Operations. AUTOMOTIVE OPERATIONS This segment engages in the design, manufacture, assembly, and sale of passenger cars, minivans, and commercial vehicles. The company’s subsidiary, Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (Daihatsu), produces and sells mini-vehicles and compact cars. Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino), also a subsidiary of the company, produces and sells commercial vehicles, such as trucks and buses. The company also manufactures automotive parts, components, and accessories for its own use and for sale to others. Vehicle Models The company’s vehicles (produced by the company, Daihatsu, and Hino) could be classified into two categories, such as hybrid vehicles and conventional engine vehicles. Its product line-up includes subcompact and compact cars, mini-vehicles, mid-size, luxury, sports and specialty cars, recreational and sport-utility vehicles, pickup trucks, minivans, trucks, and buses. Hybrid Vehicles As of March 31, 2012, the total number of the company’s hybrid vehicles sold was 3.854 million units. It offers hybrid version of the Crown, which is the signature model of the Toyota brand in Japan. The company also offers the Lexus RX450h, which is the fully-remodeled Lexus RX400h. Its primary mass-produced hybrid car is Prius. The company provides the hybrid vehicles, such as HS250h and SAI. In 2011, the Lexus hybrid vehicle CT200h was introduced. In addition, the company introduced the Prius a (Prius Alpha) wagon. Additionally, the company introduced hybrid versions of the Camry; the Alphard and the Vellfire; and the compact hybrid vehicle Aqua. In January 2012, the company also offered the Prius plug-in hybrid and the remodeled GS450h. Conventional Engine Vehicles Subcompact and Compact: The company’s subcompact and compact cars include the four-door Corolla sedan. The Yaris, marketed as the Vitz in Japan, is a subcompact car to European consumers. In Japan, it offers the micropremium iQ, as well as the remodeled Passo, Ractis, and Vitz. In India, it offers the Etios. Mini-Vehicles: Mini-vehicles are manufactured and sold by Daihatsu. Daihatsu manufactures mini-vehicles, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and auto parts. Mini-vehicles are passenger cars, vans, or trucks with engine displacements of 660 cubic centimeters or less. Daihatsu sold approximately 600 thousand mini-vehicles and 182 thousand automobiles on a consolidated basis for the period ended March 31, 2012. From 2011, the company began to sell some mini-vehicles manufactured by Daihatsu under the Toyota brand. Mid-Size: The company’s mid-size models include the Camry, which has been the primary selling passenger car in the United States. The Camry was remodeled in 2011. Camry sales in the United States for 2011 were approximately 308 thousand units (including Camry hybrids). In addition, its other mid-size models include the REIZ for the Chinese market; the Avensis for the European market; and the Mark X for the Japanese market. Luxury & Large: In North America, Europe, Japan, and other regions, the company’s luxury lineup consists primarily of vehicles sold under the Lexus brand name. Lexus passenger car models include the LS, the GS, the ES, the HS, the IS, the CT, and the LFA. Lexus models also include the LX, the GX, and the RX sold as luxury sport-utility vehicles in the United States. The company sells its luxury automobiles in Japan under the Lexus brand. As of May 31, 2012, the Lexus brand lineup in Japan included the LS, the GS, the HS, the IS, the CT, the RX, and the LFA. The Toyota brand’s full-size luxury car includes the Crown and the Crown Majesta. The company also sells the Century limousine in Japan. Sports and Specialty: In the United States, the company sells the Scion tC, a sports model targeted at young drivers. It offers the LFA model under the Lexus brand as the sports model.
