Time Warner Cable Inc. provides video, high-speed data, and voice services in the U.S. with cable systems located primarily in five geographic areas, such as New York State (including New York City), the Carolinas, the Midwest (including Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin), Southern California (including Los Angeles), and Texas. As of December 31, 2013, the company served 14.4 million residential customers and 624,000 business customers. The company also sells video and online advertising inventory to various local, regional, and national customers. Services Residential Services The company offers video, high-speed data, and voice services, as well as security and home management services to residential customers. Video Services Programming: The company’s video service provides approximately 300 channels (including on average approximately 180 high-definition (HD) channels) and 18,000 hours of video-on-demand (VOD) programming, which increasingly, consumers could watch on the device of their choosing, both inside and outside the home. It offers various tiers and packages of video programming and music services ranging from a basic package with approximately 20 channels to packages that include all programming services to which the company has rights. It tailors some of its programming tiers and packages to appeal to specific groups of customers. The company offers specialty tiers of genre-based programming, such as Movie Pass and TWC Sports Pass, as well as an amount of foreign-language programming, some available in packages and others on an à la carte basis. The company’s residential video subscribers also might subscribe to premium network programming, such as HBO, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax and related offerings. Time-shifting: The company provides a range of advanced services, such as VOD, digital video recorders (DVRs) and Start Over and Look Back services that give residential video subscribers control over when they watch their favorite programming. The company’s VOD service provides residential video subscribers with access to a selection of movies, programming from broadcast and cable networks, music videos, local programming and other content as a complement to the linear networks to which they subscribe. Its VOD service also offers a selection of featured movies and special events on a VOD and pay-per-view basis. In addition, premium network (HBO) subscribers have access to the premium network’s VOD content without additional fees. During 2014, the company planned to increase its VOD library capacity to approximately 75,000 hours. The company offers equipment with DVR functionality that enables residential video subscribers to pause and/or rewind ‘live’ television programs and record programs for future viewing. The company also offers Whole House HD DVR, a multi-room DVR service, which allows a program recorded on a DVR to be watched through other compatible set-top boxes in a customer’s home. In addition, customers might program their DVRs remotely through a smartphone, tablet, or computer. During 2014, the company planned to begin deploying six tuner DVRs with 1 terabyte of storage. The company also offers Start Over, which enables digital video subscribers using a company-provided set-top box to restart select ‘in progress’ programs directly from the relevant channel and Look Back, which extends the window for viewing a program to 72 hours after it has aired. New Ways to Watch: The company, through its TWC TV apps, enables in-home viewing of approximately 300 channels of live programming and approximately 4,000 hours of VOD programming on Apple iOS and Android tablets and smart phones, Amazon Kindle Fire, Roku Streaming Players, Samsung Smart TVs and Xbox 360 video game consoles, as well as on PC and Mac computers through www.twctv.com. In addition, subscribers are able to use their smartphone, tablet or computer as a remote control with the ability to access the interactive program guide and parental controls and change television channels on the company’s set-top boxes. The company, through the same TWC TV apps, also enables video subscribers to watch certain live channels
